Job Description

Main Purpose 

The Board acts as the ultimate decision maker for BUCS, ensuring that it is operating in line with its strategic aims and fulfilling it's charitable purposes. The Board are committed to the long-term interests of the organisation and meet regularly to oversee and direct business operations.  The Board are looking to recruit an EDIA lead who will undertake the responsibility of ensuring that BUCS realises its commitments to the principles of EDIA and implements these in all its practice. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Advocate the incorporation of EDIA principles into BUCS policies and strategies. 

  • Provide constructive check and challenge to ensure that EDIA principles are considered within BUCS leadership and decision making. 

  • Advocate that BUCS values and welcomes different perspectives, backgrounds, cultures, views, outlooks and approaches that a diverse Board, workforce and volunteer network provide. 

  • Work in collaboration with the BUCS staff team to drive the creation and delivery of BUCS diversity and inclusion action plan. 

  • Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit in accordance with its Articles of Association. 

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies, codes and funding partners, including but not limited to Companies House, the Charities Commission, HMRC and the UK Code for Sport Governance. 

  • Act in the charity’s best interest and ensure the charity’s resources are managed responsibly. 

  • Support the delivery of the BUCS Strategy, with particular reference to the EDIA elements by advising and constructively challenging the development, implementation and evaluation of the BUCS approach to EDIA in policies, surveys and their findings, strategies and across its full portfolio of activities. 

  • Support the organisation to identify, manage and mitigate risk, especially elements associated with EDIA. 

  • Chair the EDIA working group - reporting to the Board on the organisations progress towards planned actions and achievements across staff, the membership and key stakeholders. 

  • Hold a place on the nominations committee to ensure that BUCS embeds EDIA principles in its recruitment and meets its obligations to gender parity and diversity targets for Board Trustees and employees. 

  • Represent BUCS in public. 

Person Specification

BUCS are looking for an expert in a relevant field, with experience of developing and delivering EDIA strategies with tangible outcomes in any sector. The ideal candidate will have significant experience within EDIA and will bring their passion for driving change to BUCS to impact within sport, governance bodies and staff.

Key skills and knowledge 

  • Previous Trustee experience within a Board director or Trustee position. 

  • Knowledge of corporate governance and charity law, and the responsibilities of non-executive Directors. 

  • Good experience of developing and monitoring the delivery of strategies. 

  • Ability to work with, support and constructively challenge the Executive and Board colleagues. 

  • Experience of developing strategies and initiatives in the realm of EDIA. 

  • A commitment to BUCS, its mission, vision and values. 

  • An understanding of sport in the Higher Education environment. 

  • Highly developed analytical, communication and influencing skills. 

  • Ability to exercise good independent judgement.
