Job Description

The UN Global Compact Network UK is part of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest responsible business initiative. We connect UK companies and other organisations in a global movement dedicated to driving corporate sustainability. We promote practical sustainability leadership, share knowledge across sectors, and shape the business environment to create a world we want to live and do business in.

The UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles, rooted in UN treaties, provide a robust foundation from which we lead UK business action on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our mission is to turn global momentum on sustainability into practical local action.

Our strategic plan has three pillars:

  • Inspiring business ambition to deliver the Global Goals

  • Enabling practical action for sustainable business growth

  • Shaping the policy environment to support responsible business

You can read about the UN Global Compact's Values and Behaviours model here. You can find information about the UN Global Compact Network UK's governance here.

The UN Global Compact Network UK structures its programme into three workstreams: Climate Action, Business & Human Rights, and Global Goals. The Network has over 400 participating companies and our membership grew by 50% in 2021. The Network Secretariat is also growing; joining our team is a great career development opportunity.

The Climate Action Programme Manager will report to the Executive Director and will lead our work driving corporate action on climate change.

We’re looking for:

  • Someone that has strong subject knowledge. We need you to be familiar with the key climate-related issues facing business right now, and also what business should anticipate in the years ahead.

  • Someone with lots of experience leading a team. You will head up a small team and their wellbeing, productivity, and professional development will be a top priority.

  • Someone that thinks strategically. Knowing the issues is just the start, you will need to plan and develop programming (primarily B2B events) and engage collaborators to deliver real measurable impact.

  • Someone that communicates effectively. You will need to inspire and enable business action through a variety of media including speaking at virtual and live events organised by ourselves and others, writing reports, and posting on social media.

  • Someone that manages efficiently. You will need to oversee multiple projects at different stages of development concurrently and will need to be well organised.

The UN Global Compact Network UK has a broad remit, but the Network Secretariat team is relatively small, so the Climate Action Programme Manager may be required to support other activities from time to time.

In your first six months in the role:

We’ll expect you to get settled quickly and start overseeing our established Climate Action programming. Specific tasks will include developing marketing plans and delivery of B2B learning events for Network members and the wider business community. This includes a TCFD Working Group, publications drawing out content from last year's programme, and webinar series on Reducing Scope 3 Emissions and the nexus of Climate & Human Rights.

We will also want you to plan a Climate Action “flagship” project for the autumn ie. a Climate Summit or a Net Zero Roadshow or maybe you'll have a better idea?

What are next steps?

First you'll be asked to complete an equal opportunities questionnaire. The main reason we're using the Applied platform is to eliminate bias from our hiring process, so it's really important that we have this information so we can see if it's working. We will only ever see stats about groups and never about you; answering these questions will never have an impact on your application.

The next step is to get some essential admin information from you.

Finally, we will ask you to answer four questions designed to test your ability to do the job. Please give it your best effort, your scores on these questions will be the primary consideration in whether you are invited for an interview. To avoid bias, we don't look at CVs until later in the process.

Every application will be scored and you will recieve feedback.

Good luck!
