Job Description

Program Leader - apply here for any of the Program Leader roles

Startmate is hiring a number of Program Leaders to run our fellowships and help us make Australia and New Zealand the best place in the world to build a startup. Our Fellowships help talented, ambitious people from a multitude of backgrounds gain the network and skills needed to thrive in the startup world, and the Program Leaders will be the custodians of these fellowships and communities as we grow.

As a Program Leader, you’ll be the face of your program, with deep empathy for and understanding of your customer group and the ability to one day represent them at an industry level. Each day you’ll work with a number of stakeholders - from coaches to participants to industry leaders - to create a world-class experience for the fellows and ultimately strive to both increase the representation and deepen the quality of your customer group within tech in ANZ. At the same time, you’ll be making a massive impact in startups across the ecosystem by giving them access to brilliant, ambitious, diverse, and much-needed talent.

We are looking to hire Program Leaders to run the following fellowships:

  • Our flagship Women Fellowship

  • Engineering Fellowship

  • Media Fellowship

  • Talent Fellowship

  • Athlete Fellowship

  • HealthTech Fellowship

  • Have an idea for a different fellowship you’d like to run? We’d love to hear from you!

About the role

Over the past year, Startmate has gone from running one program to 6 programs across operators, founders and investors. In 2022, we want to triple that again and launch 10 new programs that will allow us to reach new audiences and play a meaningful (and much-needed) role in creating diverse talent pools for the ANZ startup ecosystem.

Our Fellowships typically run twice per year and accept anywhere from 50-200 people from across Australia and New Zealand per cohort.

Here is a brief overview of some examples of work you will commandeer:

  • Program Outreach: Work with the media team to implement an outreach strategy that generates interest in the programs.

  • Program Design: Use our best-practice playbooks and collaborate with our operations team to design a world class program for your customer segment. Each program you’ll index heavily on feedback and tracking key success metrics so we can always be innovating and improving.

  • Program/Community Management: Support the Fellows in the next chapter of their career by facilitating a world-class program, building and managing a community of hundreds of Fellows, Alumni and Coaches, and connecting fellows to their dream jobs in a startup.

  • Relationship Building: Use your exceptional people-connecting skills to develop strong relationships with startups and key stakeholders to generate a pipeline of job opportunities and amplify the Fellowship as the place to go to hire top talent.

Position Requirements

Your background is less important than the key skills, which might include:

  • Elite communicator: as you will have seen above, this role is going to operate as the coordinator of many different stakeholders and moving parts. We need a considered, proactive communicator who is going to be able to nurture these relationships. You should also be a confident public speaker and have excellent written communication.

  • Customer expertise and empathy: Our programs regularly have NPS scores of 75+. We want you to be the custodian of the communities we’re building programs for and represent their best interests. We’re hiring people who are deeply passionate about the communities they’re responsible for.

  • Fast learner: This role is incredibly broad, covering everything from outreach to session facilitation to community management. Whilst we by no means expect you to have experience in all these areas, we need someone who can learn on their feet, ask the right questions and drive their own development.

We’re looking for someone who is as passionate as us about making Australia and New Zealand the best places in the world to start and grow a company. You must have a high ownership mentality and the ability to take responsibility for goals and outcomes.

Working at Startmate

We believe that building a diverse and inclusive team is critical to Startmate’s success. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, or marital, veteran, or disability status. We use Applied to ensure every applicant gets an equal chance of success.

We offer:

  • Community: The Startmate community is a unique mix of founders, operators and investors — the one thing everyone has in common is ambition. Startmate is much more than just our team, it’s a community built on paying it forward.

  • Autonomy: You will have very high autonomy to realise your dreams within your area

  • Flexibility: We are a remote-first team with coverage across Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Noosa and New Zealand. We currently have an office in Melbourne with satellite offices in Sydney and Auckland.

  • Access: You get to work with every well known and less well-known Australian and Kiwi startup, VC and angel — Canva, Safety Culture, Propeller, Vend, Xero, Blackbird, Square Peg, AirTree, rampersand, Folklore — you name it!

  • Great vibes: Being able to bring your best self to work is really important to us. We index heavily on wellbeing and engagement to make sure that you’re able to turn up with energy and resilience each day.

  • A share of Startmate’s success: We think it is important to share successes with the whole team. All Startmate employees receive carry in our funds and are owners in the management company.
