What you will be doing:

You will lead assessing candidates for inclusion on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) across the full spectrum of the historic environment, providing accurate and timely specialist advice to agreed standards, formats and deadlines, including for Enhanced Advisory Services cases.

You will work with equal ease on reactive casework and strategic projects, responding to Historic England regional and corporate priorities, undertaking consultation procedures with key stakeholders including local authorities, amenity societies, owners and applicants.

You will deliver recommendations to the Team Leader based on robust, well- expressed assessment and consultation, recognise and flag contentious or controversial cases as early as possible, ensuring risks are identified and mitigated and external interests and perceptions considered, building on expertise in particular areas of specialist knowledge, and to use, share and disseminate this knowledge as appropriate within and outside Historic England.

Your role will be to mentor Assistant Advisers and apprentices, working with other regional and central teams to ensure the alignment of Listing activity with agreed priorities and underpinning research as appropriate.

Working with partners and stakeholders to deliver strategic and thematic Listing programmes, promoting our Enhanced Advisory Services and contribute to EAS casework, you will manage strategic projects in accordance with group procedures as agreed with the Team Leader.

You will be a champion of the principles of Listing and current Listing policy and communicate them through various media including TV and radio where required, building relationships with external stakeholders and attend and contribute to Conservation Officer fora as agreed with the Team Leader, support the Listing Team through duty cover and other agreed mechanisms and represent Listing on internal programme boards and networks as agreed with the Team Leader.

Who we are looking for:

  • Experience of working in and specialist assessment of the historic environment.

  • Excellent communication skills at all levels – written and verbal

  • Experience of legislative regimes for protecting the historic environment

  • Ability to build positive external and internal working relationships and effective cross team working

  • Ability to juggle heavy casework loads whilst continuing to meet deadlines

  • Commitment to a strong team working ethos.

The role will require travel to Historic England offices and locations throughout South-West England.   Some locations may not be serviced by public transport.

Due to the national remit of the role, attendance at meetings and site visits may occasionally involve overnight stays.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance.

We are an inclusive employer and believe that flexible working options are for everyone. We want to make sure our working arrangements don’t prevent anyone from joining us because of their personal circumstances. We also want to provide you with the best balance in your home and work life that we can.

We are open to considering options including job sharing, part-time working, compressed hours working and different working locations, including hybrid working. Please visit our jobs pages or contact us to find out more.
