About the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT)

The Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) is a global leader in social impact consulting. We apply behavioural science to design better policies and services, helping governments, nonprofits, and corporations solve complex real-world problems. Originally established within the UK government in 2010, we are now a global social-purpose company. Our North America team operates in a fast-paced, collaborative environment dedicated to evidence-based policymaking. We are currently a team of 18 in the USA and 6 in Canada and are looking to grow.  This is a small business which is part of a larger global organisation and the role will be broad in remit, requiring a flexible mindset.

About you

We are seeking a motivated professional looking to relaunch their career after a minimum 2-year career break. This role is specifically designed for those ready to transition back into a full-time or part-time role. We highly value the diverse experience gained during career breaks - including those who may have been keeping their skills sharp by managing operations or accounting for small businesses on a part-time or freelance basis during their time away from formal employment (for example, operations or accounting for a family business).

You will be part of a team at BIT that values evidence, humility, and social impact. This role offers the opportunity to go beyond "data entry" and contribute to the operational excellence of a company committed to changing how the world works.

About the role

As the Staff Accountant and Operations Support, you will be a cornerstone of our financial health. You will manage the monthly finance schedule and ensure seamless operations across BIT US and BIT Canada. This is a high-visibility role requiring a blend of technical accounting precision, proactive problem-solving, and a service-oriented mindset to support our internal teams and external partners.

Key responsibilities

Full-Cycle Accounts Payable & Expenses

  • Vendor Management: Own the AP lifecycle, from setting up new vendors and maintaining W9s to processing invoices and managing weekly payment runs.

  • Expense & Travel: Oversee employee expense reimbursements and company credit card accounts, ensuring strict adherence to company policy. Manage the travel vendor platform and user access.

Accounts Receivable & Revenue Management

  • Billing: Prepare client invoices, maintain billing rate cards, and post cash applications promptly.

  • Collections: Monitor AR aging reports and collaborate with project teams to resolve past-due accounts while maintaining positive client relationships.

  • Revenue Analysis: Assist with monthly income recognition and the evaluation of accrued/deferred income by project.

General Ledger & Month-End Close

  • Close Cycle: Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes through journal entries, accruals, and intercompany reconciliations.

  • Fixed Assets: Maintain the fixed asset system, tracking purchases, disposals, and assignments for tax and audit purposes.

  • Reporting: Prepare accurate financial schedules and reports related to AP/AR performance.

Project Finance & Contract Compliance

  • System Integrity: Set up new contracts and invoice schedules in the finance system (Deltek Vantagepoint), ensuring data matches signed agreements.

  • Project Control: Monitor timesheet accuracy, process contract modifications, and maintain audit trails for project financial activities.

  • Regulatory Support: Support project and general audits. Ensure compliance with corporate policies, ASC606, and federal regulations (FAR/CFR).

Ideal experience and qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a business-related field.

  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in AP, AR, or general accounting.

  • Technical Proficiency: Intermediate to advanced Excel skills. Familiarity with Deltek Vantagepoint is a significant plus but by no means essential.

  • Operational Mindset: A desire to streamline processes and provide high-quality "internal customer service" to your colleagues.

  • Attributes: Exceptional attention to detail, the ability to manage competing deadlines, and a high degree of discretion regarding confidential data.
