Job Description

We are recruiting a Policy Adviser to join our Motor and Liability team. You’ll work collaboratively to maintain an effective and influential profile for the ABI on motor insurance issues and develop policy in this area.

You don’t need to have prior experience in motor insurance, but if you’re interested in working a policy area at the forefront of what’s possible in technology, this might be the job for you. One of your key projects will be to lead on the ABI’s work on automated vehicles and promoting us as an informed and influential voice on the development of automated driving technology.

Your role:

The core of your role will be to work with our members and relevant contacts in government to develop policy positions and deliver policy projects on behalf of the motor insurance industry.

Day to day you will:

• Work with wider stakeholders to coordinate the insurance industry’s response to policy proposals

• Lead the ABI’s policy work on road safety issues and work closely with colleagues to promote the insurance industry as an informed voice on a range of road safety issues

• Work with colleagues to develop increased consumer, political and media understanding of motor insurance

• Work closely with research partners to investigate the future challenges facing the motor insurance market

• Lead engagement with Insurance Europe from a motor insurance perspective, including attending meetings of relevant Committees and Working Groups

• Act as an effective external representative of the ABI and the insurance industry by undertaking speaking engagements and media appearances.

You’ll also be the relationship manager for Gibraltar-based motor insurers so there will be some opportunity for travel. The role is primarily based in London, however.

We’re looking for:

You’ll need to be skilled at putting together evidence-based, compelling policy initiatives and passionate about representing our members.

Confidence presenting to a variety of audiences and ensuring the content is tailored to them is key, as well as strong lobbying skills and ability to influence senior people in member firms, Government, regulators and elsewhere.

You’ll be working very closely with your colleagues so we’ll be looking for a real team player who works proactively and flexibly with others to get results.

Where can this role take you?

Wherever possible, we support our staff to develop their careers internally. The next natural step for you in this role would be a Senior Policy Adviser – but this is flexible.

With a supportive environment and the fantastic exposure you get to lots of people in the industry and the knowledge you’ll build on a range of regulatory and policy issues, the ABI is a great place to continue your career.

What training and benefits are offered?

On your first day you’ll be met by our HR team for a full company induction. You’ll then have inductions to get you up to speed with anything from Events to how our finances work, plus one to ones with relevant colleagues. Everyone goes on the CII Introduction to Insurance course and will receive plenty of on the job training. We host various Staff Learning Events throughout the year and you will be able to attend relevant ABI and industry events.

Additional training will be driven by your own personal needs and ambitions and we have a range of courses as part of our Learning and Development offering.
