We are now seeking a Senior Associate of Venture Selection who will report to the Director of Venture Selection (the “Director”), working collaboratively with the rest of The Venture Selection Team (“VST”) in curating a Portfolio of incredibly impactful and scalable ventures from around the globe. The VST is charged with the sourcing, vetting, and selecting of ventures; the maintenance and growth of an ecosystem of investors, accelerators, and other supporting entities as a pipeline for deal flow; and representing the venture selection interests of Unreasonable via thought leadership, research analysis, and participation in external-facing events. Venture selection is the fuel and drive of Unreasonable — we exist to support our entrepreneurs and their ventures. This role is designed to refine that fuel and ensure the ventures we induct into the Fellowship are among the best suited to achieve scale and success in both business and impact. 

For this position, we’re looking for someone with clear and thorough communication skills, strong organizational skills, confidence in liaising across a variety of stakeholders, and a background in growth-stage ventures operating across multiple industries, technologies, and problem sets. The candidate should have an innate ability to connect authentically and charismatically with others, driven by empathy and curiosity. Most of all, the VP needs to be able to quickly build rapport and trust with prospective and portfolio ventures. This is an exciting, multi-faceted role balancing a variety of responsibilities, working closely with the Director to guide and improve the efficacy of the team. This position will work across American, European, and Asian time zones as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PROGRAM SELECTION LEAD

Own the successful completion of a cohort associated with a given Unreasonable Partnership (e.g. Unreasonable Impact with Barclays), meeting contract requirements and internal VST criteria. The responsibilities to do so include the following:

  • Venture Sourcing

    • Identify attractive venture opportunities for the Unreasonable Portfolio

    • Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with investment firms for deal flow

    • Assess market/impact/company attractiveness to help identify compelling ventures for the Unreasonable Portfolio

    • Activate professional network to gain warm introductions to ventures of interest

  • Venture Diligence

    • Share exploratory calls with CEOs and venture stakeholders, gathering necessary data to support selection process (business viability + impactfulness + CEO fit)

    • Input call notes, due diligence material, and additional data into Venture Database/CRM

    • Communicate with venture stakeholders to gather additional data and answer questions regarding Unreasonable, the Portfolio experience, and programmatic offerings

  • Partner Engagement

    • Develop investment memos and materials for internal and corporate partner review

    • Prepare for and lead calls with partners to address process, provide updates and selection decisions

    • Manage partner expectations and addressing issues and challenges as necessary with the Director

SELECTION TEAM SUPPORT

  • In the absence of the Director, guide junior members in the selection process, fielding team inquiries, “closing” high profile ventures, sound-boarding challenging partner/venture dynamics, and providing general senior-experience direction in decision making and problem solving

  • Utilize your network to garner introductions to potential ventures

  • Review one-pagers for other initiatives as needed before they are shared with partners

  • Establish improved workflow and systems where advantageous to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness of the VST

  • Own particular team OKRs - within your scope of expertise - as determined at the beginning of each year

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR... 

  • You have a minimum of 3 to 4 years of experience in an external facing venture role at an impact investment firm or accelerator

  • You have a proven and quantifiable track record of success on prior venture and/or innovation deals, from ideation and sourcing to execution

  • You possess a strong network within the impact venture and investment community 

  • Ideally, you have an interest and knowledge base in HealthTech and FinTech to round out the expertise of our team

  • You always follow up and follow through on time

  • You are never the person who says, “That’s not my job”

  • You believe that when work is done well, magic is in the details

  • You are what we would refer to as a ​GyShiDo​ Master

  • December 1st - 2nd: If you are invited to the next round of the process, we will schedule a 20 minute phone call with you.

  • December 3rd - 8th: We will give select applicants a small “trial project” representative of the type of work associated with this position. Though it should only take a few hours to complete, we will give you 5 business days.

  • December 13th - 16th: Assuming both of us want to continue exploring the potential of working together, we'll invite you to a longer interview with our team.

  • December 16th - 17th: We will conduct reference checks on the two to three most compelling applicants for this position.

  • December 20th: Assuming you made it through the reference checks, you will be notified whether or not the position is yours.

  • January 10th: Ideally, those accepted will be able to join the company no later than Monday, January 17th.
