The Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) is looking for three quantitative researchers to join our UK team. About BIT
BIT is a social purpose company. It exists to improve people’s lives and communities. It works in partnership with national, regional and local governments, businesses, foundations and charities, to tackle major policy problems, often through testing and implementing simple yet powerful changes.
It has about 200 staff based in 8 countries across Europe, the Americas and Asia Pacific, and has run more than 1000 projects to date, including over 700 randomised controlled trials in dozens of countries. In addition to its own interventions, it openly shares expertise and helps others build capacity and skills to apply behavioural science for social good.
What does a Quantitative Research Advisor at BIT do?
The successful applicant will work on a broad range of social challenges, with a focus on the specialism of the particular team that you join (Health and Education, Economic Policy or International Development).
You will support the implementation of research and evaluations for clients like the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), Youth Futures Foundation (YFF), NITI Aayog, the Indian government’s policy think tank, Citizens Advice, and People’s Partnership.
Our current portfolio of projects includes large-scale randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of complex programmes in schools, an evaluation of interventions to reduce childhood obesity in several major global cities, and an investigation of how payroll-linked products can support financial wellbeing.
Key questions your work may answer are:
How can AI be used safely and effectively to support children to learn?
How can women in rural India be supported to access safe care during childbirth?
How can we make recruitment processes fairer for candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds?
This role is at Research Advisor level which means you will be involved in the following activities.
Designing and implementing quantitative research and evaluations;
Data management, cleaning and analysis;
Interpreting and communicating results in the form of written reports, slide decks, or presentations;
Quality Assuring other researchers’ code; and
Independently managing small projects and effectively managing elements of larger projects.
What makes a great Quantitative Research Advisor at BIT?
We’re looking for people who understand what we do, share our values and are keen to learn and develop their expertise. You should have most of the skills listed below, but we expect to provide training and development support in some areas.
Excellent quantitative skills. You have a Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant quantitative subject (such as economics, econometrics, statistics or psychology), or relevant work experience that demonstrates a similar level of understanding. You are proficient in R.
Demonstrable knowledge of theory and practice of statistical concepts. You can explain linear and logistic regressions, hypothesis testing, clustered standard errors, statistical power calculations and stratification. You understand the conceptual basis behind power calculations and the factors that affect power.
A solid understanding of ‘causality’ and statistical reasoning. You can design experiments which will provide a causal estimate of the effectiveness of a particular intervention and you can assess whether existing research produces causal estimates or not, and weigh the strength of the evidence from different statistical methods.
Knowledge and understanding of field experiments. You understand the concept of a randomised control trial, both individual-level and clustered, in real world settings (like schools or neighbourhoods). You have experience or training in using and analysing experimental data sets and/or administrative data for the purposes of evaluation or predictive modelling.
Ability to manage workloads from multiple projects simultaneously. You can manage a workload of several projects at the same time, and deliver to a high standard, following quality assurance processes, on a tight deadline.
Public policy design. You can see both sides of an argument, for example, on universal free school meals or regulations to limit risky gambling behaviour, and you can think about what makes some policies effective and others impractical for clients and partners.
Clear and convincing communications. You can explain complex topics in simple terms. You can lead parts of a workshop or presentation and write clearly and concisely. Bonus if you can design clear and impactful slide decks!
Managing and developing yourself at work. You demonstrate high self-awareness and regularly self-reflect. You are aware of the impact that your actions and words have on those around you. You are resilient and accept responsibility for decisions whether they achieve the desired outcome or not.
