Job Description
Role: Tech Director
Location: Office in London, remote working fully supported. International travel for certain projects / engagements.
Contract: We welcome applications from people who are interested in seeking a full or part time, permanent role.
We are Public Digital, a digital transformation consultancy. We help global institutions that matter thrive in the internet era. We apply the culture, processes, business models and technologies of the internet era to help teams build and run excellent services. Working with the leaders doing strategy, and the teams doing delivery, we operate globally, advising large organisations and governments on six continents.
We’re values-driven and we articulated them in our ‘positions’ on the Public Digital website.
Attitude as much as skill, is critically important to us as a team and we look for entrepreneurialism, initiative, kindness, and a willingness to pitch in. Our theory of change is: Digital. Teams. Work - we fundamentally believe transformation is about people, and that change comes from creating great teams and the conditions to successfully empower them.
Role overview
Our clients want to deliver more value using internet-era technology. We’re looking for highly experienced technology leaders to work at a senior level, helping our clients understand their current digital capability, identify and remove barriers that prevent them from providing great technology, and build new capabilities.
We know that great technology is only part of a great internet-era organisation and need people who can go deep on the technology but are equally adept working on all the organisational challenges that impact delivery. You’ll be comfortable working at the most senior levels of organisations to inform and develop strategy, and adept at the day-to-day rhythms of building and scaling teams who deliver human-centred digital products and services.
What You’ll do for us:
Shape and scale digital transformation within large, complex organisations, helping clients to build the right teams with the right talent at the right times, so that our clients have their own sustainable digital capability and ways of working.
Support and influence executives at the most senior levels of organisations and governments, building their digital instincts and knowledge, with a particular focus on technology.
Exemplify and articulate the benefits of digital ways of working, with a constant focus on user-centred outcomes.
Assess clients’ technology and wider digital maturity in order to help them focus their transformation efforts.
Be able to assess, attract and develop world-class digital transformation practitioners.
Be comfortable with ambiguous, fast-paced and often political environments, and able to unblock tactical and strategic issues as they arise.
Contribute to the wider growth and culture of Public Digital, helping to improve the way we work, and having a public voice on digital transformation.
What we’re looking for:
Exceptional stakeholder management at board or ministerial level.
Significant experience of shaping and scaling internet-era technology delivery and operations, with hands-on experience of public cloud services, and continuous delivery practices.
Understanding of the ongoing challenges of running a complex technology estate over time, and common structural, process, and financial challenges.
Influential communicator with clarity of thought and delivery to diverse audiences.
Entrepreneurial mindset, comfortable in highly ambiguous environments.
Pragmatic approach to building solid, sustainable and productive working relationships.
Drive and passion in owning work from start to finish.
Financially and commercially literate, comfortable understanding clients’ licensing and contractual landscape.
Ability to create and sustain a working culture that is agile, open, humble and diverse, where delivery teams feel empowered to do their best work.
Ability to talk with credibility, and influence people who are in a range of technology-related professions practitioners, from software developers, through to ITIL/ITSM process specialists
You may also have:
Experience leading multiple multi-disciplinary teams producing user-facing digital services along the lines described in the UK government’s digital service standard.
Experience of managing the end of major technology contracts and/or migrating mission-critical “legacy” applications.
What’s in it for you?
Deliver high-impact work with leading institutions around the world
An opportunity to work strategically at a leadership level, helping decision makers to make informed decisions.
Grow with us: the opportunity to grow and progress rapidly within an engaged, supportive environment
Be empowered to do your best work

Reach a global audience as a thought leader on technology and service design: publish blog posts and other articles; speak at conferences and events as a representative of Public Digital
