We are excited to be recruiting a Market Cleaner to join the team at Borough Market. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in one of London’s most iconic destinations, helping to deliver an outstanding experience for every customer who visits our Market.

As a Market Cleaner, you will be responsible for setting up the Market, maintaining cleanliness of all areas, clearing customer tables, and managing the waste compound. You will also be responsible for breaking down the market after closing, leaving all areas in a state of readiness for the overnight wholesalers and restaurant traders.

This role has the responsibility to ensure all areas are properly maintained, to provide a safe working environment for market staff and a welcoming, safe environment for customers.

Key responsibilities include;

  • Assisting with setting up and dismantling the market.

  • To empty all wheelie & recycling bins from the market several times a day, as and when required.

  • Clear up rubbish left by customers on an ongoing basis throughout the day, including litter picking, emptying of bins etc.

  • Carry out jet washing and maintain market estate and surrounding areas and ensure market is kept clean at all times.

  • To use the forklift and operate the compactor and cardboard bailer ensuring all health and safety policy is complied with in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Report any machinery faults and be responsible for daily checks to the forklift truck (lights, tyres, oil levels, etc.), filling in checklist before operating and cleaning of the sweeping machine (filters, brushes, loader, etc).

  • To clean traders’ communal storage areas on a regular basis and assist them in storing their equipment effectively in order to maximise use of space.

The ideal candidate will have;

  • Experience of working in a cleaning team within a similar environment

  • Ability to work in a flexible manner

  • Approachable attitude with colleagues

  • Ability to work well in a team

  • A reliable, enthusiastic and ‘can do’ approach

You’ll be professional, enthusiastic and dependable, with a proactive, can-do approach. Flexibility is key, as weekend and out-of-hours will be required. This may sometimes need to be in addition to the core contracted hours per week.
