ABOUT LUMINATE 

Luminate is a global foundation working to ensure that everyone – especially those who are underrepresented - has the information, rights, and power to influence the decisions that shape society. The foundation is focused on enabling people to fully participate in civic and political life, to safely challenge power, and to access accurate, trustworthy information. It was established by philanthropists Pierre and Pam Omidyar and has worked for over a decade on issues related to governance and citizen engagement. 

ROLE 

Luminate is seeking a Strategic Communications Associate to manage our website, newsletter, email campaigns, and social media channels. The candidate will be responsible for writing, curating, editing, and publishing content across these channels to promote our mission. The ideal candidate will have several years' experience in managing digital channels and creating compelling content for a comparable organisation. The Associate will also provide general communications support for the team. 

We're looking for someone with exceptional writing and editing skills, a great eye for detail, who is process driven, can work in support of multiple partners and projects simultaneously, who has a proven track record in developing and running content creation across web, social media, and video, and a dedication to serving the team’s priorities. You'll collaborate effectively with team members to support their communication needs and ensure consistency of messaging and branding. 

TEAM 

The Associate will be part of the Strategic Communications team which delivers on Luminate’s mission by using its expertise to strengthen, build, and protect its reputation. The team works to increase its ability to influence, tell relevant and coherent stories, and build connection, visibility, and engagement across audiences. 

This role is based in Washington, DC, reports to the Senior Manager, Strategic Communications, and works in collaboration with team members in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. 

RESPONSIBILTIES 

Digital content (70%) 

  • Manage digital channels including writing, editing, and publishing content for our newsletter, email campaigns, and social media (Twitter and LinkedIn) 

  • Collaborate with external designers to create graphics for use across platforms, including website and social media channels 

  • Use analytics and data to track the effectiveness of digital campaigns and make recommendations for improvements 

  • Manage and update Luminate’s website to ensure that it reflects the latest news and initiatives 

  • Manage relationship with website consultant to recommend website functionality improvements and to test and implement changes  

  • Design and implement streamlined processes for recurring projects such as curating and sending newsletters, writing and distributing social media content, and hosting webinars 

  • Maintain content in Luminate’s digital asset manager  

  • Proofread all digital content for clarity, grammar, spelling, and tone  

General communications support (30%) 

  • Edit a wide range of communications materials, including press releases, media pitches, talking points, and other collateral materials 

  • Monitor media coverage on activity related to the organisation and our partners 

  • Manage Luminate’s calendar tracking events, publications, research, and other external content 

  • Process contracts and agreements for the Strategic Communications team 

  • Coordinate a variety of organisation-wide processes including translation needs, design requests, and staff photography 

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Excellent editing and writing skills 

  • Experience managing social media accounts and with social media monitoring and analytics tools 

  • Experience working with designers, videographers, and other vendors to develop content 

  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, time management, and adherence to deadlines 

  • Skilled at developing and running processes to ensure efficiency for content creation and approval 

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with team members to support their communications needs and ensure consistency of messaging and branding 

  • Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is a bonus
