Data and Analytics

Providing a host of data products and services, Data and Analytics drive better decision-making and improved customer services. Our data scientists, analytics and tools help customers in all kinds of ways - from improving their journeys and providing useful information, through to delivering refunds when things go wrong, and enhancing our operational services and planning.

Job Purpose:

The post holder will complete the development and testing of analytical techniques and tools to answer analytic questions in response to key strategic operational and planning questions that can be answered with data. These questions help inform, across all of TfL, both long term strategic planning questions based on analysis of TfL’s large and historic data sets and short term operational questions.

Key Accountabilities:
  • To generate, analyse and interpret complex analytic information using a range of complex data sets to answer applied research questions. Presenting data science and analytics conclusions and recommendations to the Chief Technology Officer and Chief Data Officer to inform strategic decision making;

  • Provide customer data insight, including statistics and interpretation, for all of TfL to inform business decisions

  • To develop and test the analytic methodologies for tools which provide business intelligence from large TfL data sets to ensure business outcomes are supported by robust analytic methodologies

  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to more junior colleagues to ensure high quality team responses to business questions

  • To present the outputs of analysis and interpretation to TfL businesses and to customers, adding explanatory commentary, interpretation and insight to data presented in charts, graphs and tables which answers the business question. This output must be clear, accurate and insightful for both technical and non-technical audiences, including TfL senior management.

  • To interpret business questions, define and produce valuable analysis in a responsive way to ensure high quality business intelligence and insights are provided to answer questions that benefit TfL and its customers

Knowledge:
  • Detailed knowledge of data analytics and statistical analysis tools (e.g. SAS, SPSS, Toad, R, Python) (Essential);

  • Knowledge of data analytics tools and methodologies including: predictive data modelling and statistical analysis, quantitative and qualitative analysis tools.

  • Proven knowledge of how to use data to answer business questions that drive insight.

  • Knowledge of London’s public transport industry;

  • Knowledge of relevant national and international legislation pertaining to the Government/Public Sector IT, including knowledge of basic confidentiality and data protection requirements that apply to the processing of customer information.

Skills:
  • Ability to analyse complex data consisting of millions of rows and draw conclusions using new analytic approaches

  • Ability to present conclusions in polished narrative products to senior business leaders (Essential);

  • Ability to propose solutions to analytical problems using a data driven approach. (Essential);

  • Ability to communicate complex analysis effectively, both orally and in writing, with people across the organisation and outside so that the conclusions and implications of the analysis are clear and can be understood by colleagues with a wide range of technical skills. (Essential);

  • Ability to understand the business impact and strategic context of the interpretation of complex data.

  • Ability to work in a team environment, coaching more junior colleagues and with both business colleagues and with development teams, demonstrating strong collaboration skills.

Experience:
  • Experience in working with stakeholders to define business questions and analysis for decision-making.

  • Strong experience in working with large datasets and scale to provide complex quantitative analyses;

  • Strong experience of using data analysis to inform and influence business strategy and decision making.

  • Strong experience of gathering, collating, analysing and publishing data in multi – media formats, for both technical and non-technical audiences;

  • Significant experience in a technical analytic background, such as: econometrics, economic or statistical analysis, business intelligence, information management, relational dataset design and development, or data mining.
