Job Description

Frontier Space Technologies is a UK based space biotechnology start-up. We are a small, multidisciplinary, fast-moving team of engineers, scientists and business development professionals with a keen passion for space. We provide end-to-end services to perform research and development in space. This is enabled by our core technology offering, which is a miniaturised autonomous laboratory – SpaceLab – to facilitate biological, pharmaceutical, and chemical research in space microgravity environments. This unique environment can be leveraged to develop new therapeutics for diseases on Earth and support human space exploration.

Project Description:

  • SpaceLab is a miniaturised, autonomous laboratory for performing biotechnology experiments in space environments. This project centres around development of a key PCB for life support and experiment sensors. The intern will assist with the design, development, and testing of this main PCB and integrated hardware - including imaging systems, spectrometers, and data and power interfaces - while learning about systems designed for running experiments in space.

Applicant Specification:

The applicant should have a strong interest in space and space electronics. Further interest in biotechnology and microgravity research is encouraged.

Minimum requirements:

  • Have or be currently undertaking an engineering degree in a related field, such as electrical/aerospace engineering.

  • Electronics experience (e.g., breadboarding projects, PCB design experience)

  • Python programming

Desirable requirements:

  • Have Bachelor's degree; be currently undertaking Master's degree

  • Significant previous experience with PCB design

  • Knowledge of I2C, SPI, serial, CAN, Ethernet interfaces

  • Experience with KiCAD and SPICE

  • Python, C, C++ programming

Process details:

  • 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate

  • In-person Induction Event to be held on [date], and an in-person/hybrid Showcase Event to be held at the [place/date]

  • 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement

How we work:

We strive to create a high trust environment that enables team members to bring their whole selves to work – this helps to create the foundations of an innovation culture. Our shared values are critical to this:

  • Integrity

  • Compassion

  • Simplicity - in design and how we operate

  • Sustainability

  • Fostering a culture of learning

We are a start-up, so all members of our team have a high degree of autonomy and can take ownership of their projects. Our more experienced engineers will help to guide your design process, while still giving you the room to make informed decisions. The engineering team works closely together - we aim to avoid over-compartmentalisation and ensure that all team members can get a good overview of the entire system. You will ideally gain a good understanding of the wider system, and will learn to manage external requirements that may impact your own work package (PCB design).
