Job Description

The River Base Rations Manager oversees all aspects of the rations department. They provide instruction and training in nutrition, food preparation, and meal planning. They also participate as a team member in problem solving, operations support, and facilities maintenance.

What does a Rations Manager do?

This role is in our River Base operations team, in Individual Contributor II, which means you will be involved in the following activities:

  • Plan and purchase food to accommodate a variety of dietary requirements (e.g. allergies, intolerances, preferences, etc.) for staff, students and field faculty in-town, on the road, and in the field.

  • Work with the Rocky Mountain rations department on bulk food acquisition. 

  • Perform associated bookkeeping duties. Track expenses.

  • Brief and advise field instructors on course rations, course dietary requirements, allergen management, and meals.

  • Provide Information to students about the NOLS rationing process and proper nutrition in the backcountry.

  • Maintain an impeccably clean and organized rations room and student kitchens. Oversee that food preparation, serving, and storage equipment is maintained in a sanitary, functional condition.

  • Assist with operations, including transportation, equipment, evacuations, and facilities maintenance/clean-up.

  • Periodically, supervise one to three other River Base employees within the rations department. 

  • Perform transportation tasks and other duties as assigned.
