Job Description

Senior Advisor (Indonesia)

12-month contract planned to become full time permanent

Location: Jakarta, currently work-from-home.

Are you looking for a new challenge and want to join a successful and growing organisation dedicated to creating social impact in low and middle-income countries? Do you have a passion for public policy and behavioural science? If so, we want to hear from you.

About Us

The Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) is a social purpose company that combines two approaches to improve people’s lives and communities. First, we use behavioural science (behavioural economics, social psychology) to design new policy ideas with our partners. Second, we run policy experiments, often using randomised controlled trials (RCTs), to determine the effectiveness of those ideas.

We believe that if you understand how people make decisions in the real world, you can design and deliver better policies and services. We work with government, NGO and private sector partners to design human-centred solutions that are creative, low-cost and scalable — and we robustly evaluate our recommendations to make sure they actually result in better outcomes.

All our staff believe passionately in our company values: always prioritising social impact, empiricism and humility, fresh thinking and collaboration, and public service. As our team grows, we are now looking for a Senior Advisor to join us. We provide a supportive environment, offering flexible working arrangements and other policies to ensure the wellbeing of everyone on the team.

What does a Senior Advisor at BIT do?

We are recruiting for a Senior Advisor to join our small but growing team in Indonesia. In this role, you will be expected to work on projects in Indonesia as well as contribute to work in other countries in Southeast Asia and beyond. The successful applicant will have a good knowledge of behavioural science and an understanding of mixed research methods. Experience with business development and capacity building, including training, are also highly desired.

You could be involved in projects that aim to design and test interventions to:

  • Encourage uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in Indonesia;

  • Combating illegal wildlife trafficking in Indonesia, Vietnam and China;

  • Improve community based hygiene in Indonesia;

  • Encourage healthy behaviours in online communities;

  • Improve payment adherence for employee social security.

As a Senior Advisor, you would be involved in things like:

  • Managing and delivering projects in Indonesia. You will work with the APAC Director of International Programs BIT to implement these projects.

  • Taking responsibility for scoping and developing new areas to deliver social impact in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Seeking out and securing partners for collaboration.

  • Working with colleagues across the organisation to build a positive and collaborative culture and ensuring that quality is maintained across the business.

  • Listening to the objectives and requirements of the organisation seeking advice from BIT, identifying problems, determining the appropriate research methodology with support from our specialist researchers and advising organisations based on these findings.

  • Sharing and communicating insights through activities such as running workshops with clients, and addressing seminars and conferences to present project findings.

What makes a great Senior Advisor at BIT?

We are looking for people who understand what we do, share our values, and are keen to learn and develop their expertise. We are looking for candidates with the skills listed below. We expect to provide training and development support in some of the areas.

Behavioral science: You can explain the implications of theoretical concepts such as defaults, loss aversion, and social norms and apply them in international development contexts

Public policy: You can see both sides of an argument, and you think about what makes some policies, programs and services effective and others impractical.

Experience in qualitative and quantitative research, leading to a solid understanding of ‘causality’ and statistical reasoning: You know that just because sales of sunglasses and ice creams increase at the same time, one does not cause the other. You can also describe how to run a test to prove this.

Work habits and project management: You can manage your own time and that of your colleagues to produce high quality work within a defined timeline and budget

Managing and developing yourself at work: You demonstrate high self-awareness and regularly self-reflect. You are aware of the impact that your actions and words have on those around you. You are resilient and accept responsibility for decisions whether they achieve the desired outcome or not.

Supporting and developing others: You are supportive and energize people to perform at their best. You care about the success, development and wellbeing of others and can have meaningful (and sometimes difficult!) conversations.

Clear and effective communications: You can explain complex topics in simple terms. You can lead a workshop or presentation and you write clearly and concisely.

Why work for BIT?

  • While we work in a fast-paced field, we provide a supportive environment where you’ll learn and grow with on-the-job training from our experienced team of experts. During your time in this role, we’ll help you to build the diverse range of skills you’ll need to progress your career at BIT.

  • You’ll be part of an innovative and agile team working at the forefront of cutting edge, evidence-driven applied behavioural science.

  • We encourage flexible working and have a culture which enables this. This includes flexible start and finish times, and an IT set up which allows for easy working-from-home options.
