Job Description

Mission Statement for Role

Startmate’s mission is to make ANZ the best place in the world to build a startup.

One of the biggest challenges we face here is that a lot of the most talented and ambitious people in ANZ don’t even believe that working or investing in a startup is a viable option, let alone founding one. This means that arguably the biggest bottleneck for growth in the ecosystem is simply that we don't have enough exceptional people to fuel it. Compounding this is the fact that tech in ANZ has a stunning lack of diversity, and the needle here is moving painfully slowly.

We’re changing this, and you could play a pivotal role in the shift.

We’re accelerating the growth of the entire ecosystem by flooding it with diverse, ambitious, exceptional people. We currently do this by creating highways into startups (e.g. our fellowships that target the most high-potential and underrepresented groups (e.g. women & students) or high-impact industries (e.g. climate). We also work to supercharge those already involved in startups through our upskilling programs (e.g. PM101, Customer Success) and our angel investor program (First Believers). We’ve worked out a winning formula here, and we have ambitious goals to scale these programs.

However, to come full circle, one of our biggest challenges here is actually building awareness and cultivating curiosity about startups in the non-startup ecosystem - and that’s where you come in.

If we’re to truly make the impact that we want to, we need to not only convince people who are already interested in startups to make the leap, but actually substantially increase the number of people who are interested in startups.

Startmate is already the epicentre of startup ambition. We have a trusted and highly respected brand within the startup ecosystem. Our next mountain to climb is to build that brand in new and diverse audiences - corporate, healthcare workers, academics, hospitality, education, TAFEs, you get the picture.

To do this, you’ll tell and amplify the stories of our most ambitious. You’ll grow and engage our newsletter audience. You’ll identify new audiences and, through our content, build awareness, educate and eventually cultivate curiosity within those audiences. You’ll work closely with our growth marketing associate to ensure that we track and iterate the efficacy of the work we do, and are able to attract interest in our programs. In time, you’ll help us scale our marketing function, and drive the strategy for how we become a household name synonymous with ambition.

Role Scope: Your Responsibilities

Grow the size, quality and engagement of Startmate’s audience

  • How: Ownership of an experimental media and distribution strategy that attracts, activates and acquires ambitious and diverse people into Startmate’s audience, then continues to engage and add value to the audience

Chief Storyteller

  • How: Your role is to share the stories of our most ambitious community members in channels that will inspire and engage current and prospective audiences. You’ll predominantly do this through creating the newsletter/s and managing our writers bench. We work with a number of very talented writers who we pay to create high quality content for us.

  • You’ll come up with the content strategy and brief so they know who they’re writing for and what their key message is, and manage edits and deadlines.

  •  You’ll work with the team on our branding and positioning strategy, empowering them to speak with the Startmate ‘voice’ and use consistent and clear messaging.

Marketing

  • How: Create, manage and execute marketing campaigns in collaboration with our Growth Marketing Associate to generate interest in our programs and events.

  • You’ll work closely with the Program Leaders to understand the audience and positioning of the program, then create and execute on a marketing brief to target that audience

What you won’t do

Position Requirements

  • Communication: Excellent communication, both written and verbal, and the skills to creatively write with passion and personality. You are a wolf with spelling and grammar and love writing, interviewing and creating content from scratch. You have a keen understanding of how to express a brand voice consistently, with the right tone, at the appropriate time.

  • Marketing, specialising in content: You can run a marketing campaign from idea to execution without breaking a sweat. You love coming up with new and creative ideas to get a message across and you’re able to do the strategic thinking as well as being ‘on the tools’ to make it happen

  • Project Management: You have a high ownership mentality and are comfortable leading and executing on a project autonomously and working with other stakeholders, specifically for editorial planning and content strategy.

  • Organisation: You can make quick decisions and set priorities, with strong attention to detail and the ability to plan ahead, adapt and move quickly in a fast-paced environment.
