Job Description

Turn2us is a national charity tackling financial insecurity and its structural causes. We work with co-producers and partners to provide people in financial crisis with the means and agency to get back on their feet, build resilience, move forward with their lives and thrive.

As an equal opportunities employer, we are committed to equity, inclusion and diversity and the value people from different backgrounds bring to a team. If, like us, you believe everyone has the right to have enough to live on, and you are ambitious about eradicating financial insecurity, join us and build your career with a charity dedicated to ensuring dignity and equity for all.

Join us to shape how Turn2us is seen, heard and understood. We’re looking for a strategic and creative Senior Media Officer to help us cut through a fast-moving media landscape and build our influence where it matters most. This is an exciting role at the heart of our Income & External Affairs Directorate, where you’ll work across press, digital platforms and emerging channels to amplify powerful stories, shape public narratives and strengthen trust in our work. You’ll play a key role in raising our profile, connecting with new audiences, and amplifying the voices of those we exist to support, ensuring we are reaching the right audiences in the right ways and at the right time.

From managing our press office to shaping partnerships with creators and influencers, this role sits at the heart of how Turn2us is seen, heard and understood — helping us drive impact and income through influence.

You’ll bring senior-level experience working across media, digital platforms or public influence in a fast-moving, high-profile environment. You’re a confident and compelling writer, able to translate complex issues into clear, engaging narratives that resonate across different audiences and channels. You have strong strategic judgement, balancing opportunity, risk and ethics, and are comfortable making decisions in ambiguous or rapidly evolving situations. You understand how stories travel in today’s media landscape from traditional press to creators and online communities and are skilled at building relationships with journalists, partners and stakeholders. Above all, you’re curious, values-driven and motivated to use media and storytelling to drive real-world impact.

We offer flexible working patterns, both in terms of hours and remote working. Please note that all employees are required to work from the office a minimum of 1 day a week.

Some roles may be required to be in the office more often than others and this will be agreed with the hiring manager upon starting at Turn2us.

Please note that all job offers are subject to 2 – 3 satisfactory references and a disclosure satisfactory to Turn2us from the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS).

Please read the Senior Media Officer job pack for more information.

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Media Officer

Department: Income & External Affairs Directorate, Brand & Communications Team

Reports to: Head of Brand and Communications

Location: Hybrid: Turn2us London Hub (Farringdon) & homeworking

Contract: Permanent, 28 hours per week (0.8 FTE)

Purpose of the Role: The Senior Media Officer is responsible for building and stewarding Turn2us’s public influence across the contemporary media ecosystem, including a focus on digital platforms, creators, online communities, and emerging media channels, as well as traditional broadcast media and press.

Working in collaboration with the Head of Brand and Communications and the wider team, the Senior Media Officer will be responsible for the operational management and delivery of the Media strategy, shaping how Turn2us shows up, is talked about, and is trusted online, working across platforms where public opinion, behaviour and credibility are increasingly formed.

The role is responsible for influence, external visibility and narrative coherence across the media ecosystem, as well as for the operational management of a press office.

The duties will be carried out in line with Turn2us’ branding and external communications strategy, which includes an ambition to build strong and emerging media relations, strengthening our social and digital media presence, content marketing and our work with influencers and high-profile supporters and ambassadors. Amplification of the voices of those for whom Turn2us exists and raising the profile of the charity and its work is central to this Strategy. The work will be collaborative with colleagues across the Income and External Affairs Directorate and other teams across the organisation.

Duties and accountabilities

1. Delivery of the public influence strategy

  • Working with the Head of Brand and Communications, develop and deliver a multi‑year public influence strategy that integrates digital platforms, creator partnerships, narrative economics, and reputation-building across the media ecosystem.

  • Define where Turn2us should lead, partner, respond deliberately, or stay silent across fast‑moving online environments.

  • Translate Turn2us’s mission into platform‑specific influence strategies, not just multi-purpose generic messaging.

2. Influencer and creator partnerships

  • Working closely with the Senior Digital Officer, design and manage a structured approach to working with influencers, creators, public figures, and online advocates.

  • Assess partnerships through the lenses of credibility, ethics, reach, risk, and alignment, not just follower count.

  • Negotiate and oversee formal and informal collaborations, including paid partnerships where appropriate.

3. Management and delivery of the Press Office

  • Work alongside Turn2us’ policy and influencing team to develop media responses to major government and sector announcements and high-profile policy issues, producing press releases and quotes and briefing/advising spokespeople including the Chief Executive, Directors and relevant Turn2us staff.

  • Provide an effective service to media professionals including journalists and producers by coordinating Turn2us’ response to media enquiries through oversight of our media inbox.

4. Management and delivery of social media and emerging platforms

  • Working closely with colleagues across the team, manage the strategic delivery of how Turn2us operates across social and emerging platforms (e.g. short‑form video, creator‑led spaces, community platforms).

  • Shape organisational decisions about where to invest attention and resource, rather than attempting to be present everywhere.

  • Stay ahead of platform shifts, algorithmic changes and cultural dynamics that affect reach, trust, and discoverability, including the monitoring of public engagement across these platforms.

5. Narrative stewardship and misinformation

  • Act as a steward of Turn2us’s core narratives, ensuring coherence across partners, platforms and spokespeople, all in alignment with our brand messaging.

  • Anticipate, identify and mitigate misrepresentation, simplification or misuse of Turn2us’s work in digital spaces.

  • Lead responses to online misinformation, distortion or reputational risk that arise outside traditional media.

6. Support cross‑organisation leadership of the media strategy

  • Work with policy and influencing, programmes, fundraising, impact, data and digital teams to ensure influence objectives shape content and media campaigns from the outset.

  • In partnership with the Head of Brand and Communications, provide guidance to colleagues and trustees on digital reputational risk and opportunity.

  • Build internal capability and confidence around digital engagement without centralising all delivery.

7. Insight, learning and effectiveness

  • Define what success means for influence and engagement (beyond traditional media metrics).

  • Use insight, qualitative learning and data to refine strategy rather than produce routine coverage reporting.

  • Commission or oversee specialist external support where needed.

These are the normal duties, which the Charity requires from the position. However, it is necessary for all staff to be flexible and all employees will be required from time to time to perform other duties as may be required by the Charity for the efficient running of the charity. This Job Description is non-contractual. It will be reviewed from time to time and may be subject to change.

At Turn2us, we are committed to protecting personnel, children, adults, and service users from any harm arising from each other, themselves, our activities, or organisational failings whilst in contact with us. The post holder will be required to follow the safeguarding policy and will be responsible for integrating safeguarding into all aspects of their work.

The post holder will be expected to ensure that their work complies with contractual terms and conditions, the Charity’s policies and procedures and key legislation, such as data protection and charity law.
