Job Description

Project Description

This project will build upon the established methodologies of the Space Capabilities Catalogue (SCC) to map the capabilities of organisations in an overseas space ecosystem. The aim is to identify key players, understand their roles, and assess their position within a target space industry’s supply and value chains. By profiling organisations and mapping the sector's strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities, this project will support the identification of areas for potential collaboration between the UK and another country in future space projects and programmes.

Over the 8 weeks, we hope you will develop your skills and understanding in:

  • This internship will provide the applicant with a combination of technical and human skills applicable to research, analysis, and international collaboration in the space sector.

  • Data Research & Analysis: The intern will learn to identify, gather, and analyse data from various sources, developing their ability to assess and build comprehensive organisational profiles.

  • Supply & Value Chain Mapping: By working with the Catapult’s Ecosystem Insights Team, the intern will gain experience in mapping supply and value chains within the space industry, a key skill for strategic market analysis.

  • Reporting & Presentations: They will refine their ability to synthesise research into clear, actionable insights, improving their report writing and presentation skills for a professional audience.

  • Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: The intern will apply analytical thinking to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities within another countries Space Sector and potential areas for UK - Overseas collaboration.

  • By the end of the project, the intern will be equipped with a well-rounded skill set, valuable for both the space sector and broader industries.

The successful applicant will have the following skills:

  • A desire to learn about the UK commercial space sector and its international market interactions.

  • Basic understanding of engineering principles and their application in delivering complex systems and solutions.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written), with the ability to engage effectively with individuals at various levels across organisations.

  • Curiosity and resourcefulness—willingness to explore different options when required data is not immediately available, and the ability to document sources.

  • Meticulous attention to detail, understanding the importance of data quality in project success.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks.

    Desirables:

  • Currently studying or recently graduated with an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in economics, data science, social research, finance, statistics, or another analytical subject.

  • Basic understanding of space capabilities and technologies across the breadth of the sector.

  • Experience utilising machine learning and web scraping tools.

    Process details:

  • 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate

  • 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
