About us
Pro Bono Economics (PBE) enables professional economists from across the private, public and social sectors to use their skills to tackle some of the most pressing issues in society. Our network of experienced consultant and volunteer economists help charities and social enterprises appreciate their economic and social impact and so improve their overall effectiveness.
We are now embarking on an exciting new phase of our development, building our research and policy function to develop new ‘macro’ insights into the potential of civil society. We recently launched the Law Family Commission on Civil Society (www.civilsocietycommission.org) - a cutting-edge research programme exploring the value of civil society and the challenges and opportunities it faces in the 2020s. Armed with new content, we want to play an enhanced role in helping shape the policy debate in the UK through a programme of high profile public events, media engagement and contact with different layers of government.
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Economist to join the PBE Research & Policy team. The Senior Economist will be deeply involved in the design and delivery of the Commission, contributing original research, building a rich cross-sector network of contacts, managing senior stakeholder groups and developing policy recommendations. The Senior Economist will also contribute to PBE’s public profile, providing analysis and commentary on economic and fiscal events, managing our charity sector surveys, and developing content for publication across a range of media.

Reports to: Research and Policy Director
Main duties & responsibilities:
Design and deliver a range of high quality, original, quantitative research projects
Disseminate analysis through written reports, media articles, blogs and social media
Develop policy solutions that promote PBE’s aim of using economics to support wellbeing
Represent PBE at seminars, conferences and other public events
Manage a rich network of stakeholders in the voluntary sector, government, the private sector and academia
Work with the Research & Policy Director to plan the external facing elements of the Law Family Commission on Civil Society, including a programme of high-profile public events and publications
Monitor and keep the team informed of external policy developments relevant to PBE’s research programme
Line manage one researcher
Any other duties as deemed reasonable by the line manager.
About you
We are looking for an exceptional and experienced economist/quantitative researcher working in economics, research and policy development or a related field. The role suits candidates with formal training in economics or statistical analysis, and ideally some knowledge of the key government and administrative datasets relating to wellbeing, living standards and civil society in the UK. Candidates should have a strong track record of designing and delivering research, communicating findings, organising complex projects and an interest in developing policy recommendations.
Ideal characteristics include:
Excellent quantitative research skills, using a range of research techniques and statistical packages (ideally R or Stata)
Ability to develop a research strategy and manage a programme of projects, with clear evidence of designing, managing and delivering high quality projects on time
Ability to clearly present and explain data, using charts or other data visualisations
Interest in influencing policy change and a demonstrable interest in the public policy issues relating to civil society
Demonstrable writing and presentational skills in a range of contexts and to a range of audiences
An eye for detail and a strong dedication to quality
Proven ability to work independently and manage priorities, deadlines and projects that may involve multiple contributors
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work flexibly as part of a small team in a fast-moving environment
A network among the UK’s analytical and policy communities
A commitment to PBE’s focus on using economics to drive wellbeing improvements in the UK.
Desirable characteristics include:
Some experience analysing large datasets such as the Labour Force Survey or Understanding Society
Knowledge of econometrics/statistical modelling/scenario analysis
Qualitative research skills and knowledge of qualitative research techniques
Strong organisational skills and ability to manage complex projects
Comparative social and economic policy knowledge
An understanding and an appreciation of the diverse needs of civil society
Experience of working with the print and broadcast media
