Job Description

Are you a leader with influence and passion for innovative climate solutions that leave no one behind? Join Ashden as Chair and help scale pioneering enterprises and organisations that are cutting carbon emissions and improving lives worldwide.

Voluntary role • London/Hybrid • Expenses covered

You can find the JD and Person Specification here.

Ashden is growing fast. Over the past two years we have tripled our headcount to almost 70 staff in the UK plus a number of consultants working on our programmes in East Africa. Our current annual turnover is circa £7m, with funds coming from a range of trusts, foundations, corporates and individual supporters.

We are one year into a new five-year strategy to deepen our work in the UK and further expand our programmatic work in the Global South, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

This is a key moment to take on the role of Chair at Ashden. The appointee will succeed the current Chair, who is stepping down after 19 years as Founder-Director followed by six years as Chair, and will remain connected to Ashden through the role of Global Ambassador.

Ashden is a values-led organisation with a committed, talented team who thrive in our inclusive, supportive culture. The Chair should embody inclusive, values-driven leadership, fostering collaboration, accountability, and alignment with Ashden’s mission and values. They will champion diversity, integrity, and collective decision-making to ensure the board operates effectively and upholds the highest standards. They will maintain and enhance the collaborative working environment that exists between the board and the executive team.

We are looking for a Chair who is:

  • Deeply committed to tackling the climate crisis and a just transition.

  • Experienced in governance and board leadership.

  • Well-connected, with the ability to engage funders and decision-makers.

  • Skilled at fostering inclusive, collaborative board culture.

Time commitment: Around two - three days per month.

Remuneration: Voluntary, with expenses reimbursed.

Location: London/Hybrid.

Term: Three years, renewable to a maximum two terms.

This is a chance to amplify Ashden’s impact and champion the climate solutions the world needs.

Interviews will take place on 12 March 2026.
