Job Description

Summary

Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Business Officer as part of our Business Management Team.

The Business Management Team provides assistance across the local teams’ work and will take a proactive role in service delivery through managing the delivery of grant-aid and advisory services and dealing directly with our customers.

As part of this team, you will assist colleagues in Development Advice, Partnerships, Government Historic Estates (GHEU) and Greater London Archaeological Advisory teams (GLAAS) in the delivery of Group and corporate targets.  You will facilitate the efficient provision of statutory and other advice and will manage individual grants, including assisting with negotiations and complying with procurement and financial administration procedures.  You will assist the Local Leadership team in responding to external and internal requests for information and briefings.

What you will be doing

To act as the initial point of contact for customer enquiries concerning grant-aided projects and advisory work, ensuring high standards of customer service at all times.

To assist colleagues in the GLAAS, Development Advice and GHEU teams with the initial appraisal, recording and assessment of statutory notifications and other requests for Historic England advice, providing information as necessary for specialist consideration.

To assist colleagues in the Partnerships teams by assessing applications for HE support in accordance with corporate standards of eligibility and need, and to take full responsibility for effective management of assigned grant-aid processes including post‑grant monitoring.

To monitor regularly and take responsibility for progress chasing to facilitate timely delivery of all Historic England advice, including establishing and maintaining operational links with external customers (e.g. local authorities), and effective collaboration among colleagues within the local office.

To undertake role of ‘Super User’ as required for testing and staff training in the use of information management systems, as delegated by the Business Manager.

To assist the delivery of all Corporate Plan activities (including assisting activities such as capacity-building) as agreed with line management.

To be an effective advocate for the benefits for local places of conserving heritage assets.

To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and competencies required of the post requested by line management.

Who we are looking for

  • Experience of interpreting and analysing information and using it to inform your judgment

  • Ability to work under pressure and use own initiative

  • Experience of working directly with members of the public

  • Financial aptitude with a high level of attention to detail

  • Ability to interpret maps and architectural plans/elevations

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal)
