Job Description

Job Title: Senior Impact Lending Manager, South                                

Contract: Permanent, Full-time

Location: Home-based, South of England                                                                                                                

Responsible to: Director of Impact Lending

 Overall Purpose of the Role

The Senior Impact Lending Manager is responsible for growing Charity Bank’s lending book in London and the South of England by identifying and converting new borrowing opportunities into loans, developing relationships with new borrower sub-sectors, and raising the profile of Charity Bank and its social mission.

Key priorities include:

  • Seek new lending opportunities with UK charities, social enterprises and registered social landlords within Charity Bank’s risk appetite and criteria, including property development lending.

  • Undertake thorough credit analysis and prepare credit applications.

  • Research and develop new sub-sector relationship opportunities.

  • Actively manage existing borrower relationships and social sector networks.

  • Be a champion for actual and potential customers in the social sector, identifying barriers to access to finance and proposing, piloting and supporting innovative solutions when appropriate.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with third parties who may be a source of business for Charity Bank, including umbrella and representative organisations, trusts and foundations, and professional firms or service providers.

  • Undertake activities, including speaking at appropriate conferences, to raise awareness of Charity Bank’s profile and presence across the region and to promote Charity Bank’s role and mission.

  • Manage relationships with other lenders, both social and mainstream, with a view to cross-referring (where outside our risk appetite) and/or sharing loan deals (where beyond our risk capacity) and vice versa, including participating in and arranging syndicated loan transactions.

  • Support other members of the Team in development and syndicated deals as required.

  • Liaise with various public sector bodies, including Government and local authorities, with a view to developing our lending activities in the region.

  • Liaise with the Marketing and Communications Team to support the lending business development effort.

  • Meet business development targets as agreed by the Director of Impact Lending or other relevant Senior Managers.

  • Other tasks as may be directed by the Director of Impact Lending, the Director of Business Development and Borrower Experience or other relevant Senior Managers.

Key Accountabilities

New Business Development

  • Generate new loan approvals and drawdowns as per targets as discussed and agreed with the Director of Impact Lending or other relevant Senior Managers, with appropriate training and support.

  • Manage and develop both existing and new introducers of business to Charity Bank.

  • Develop and enhance the profile of Charity Bank to potential borrowers and depositors throughout the region by direct and indirect marketing, seeking business opportunities by attending and speaking at conferences and other external events, and by pursuing various networking opportunities. 

  • Develop relationships with Responsible Finance Providers, high street and ethical banks, and other social lenders that have complementary objectives to Charity Bank.

  • Analyse potential new lending or other business opportunities and broaden current coverage for business development, and write articles and reports, as appropriate under reference to the Director of Marketing and Communications.

  • Create and maintain contact with the regional press and media under agreed guidelines from the Director of Marketing and Communications.

  • Responsible for the full and accurate utilisation of the Bank’s CRM system.

Loan approvals and drawdowns

  • Overall responsibility for sourced loan applications from credit application and analysis to approval, legal completion and drawdown.

  • Completion of loan applications assessing associated risks, including review of business plans and financial information, site visits for fact-finding, liaising with borrower managers, directors and trustees, and ensuring that Charity Bank’s credit risk management standards are met and consistently applied. 

  • Make loan recommendations to the Credit Team and present proposals to Credit Committee as appropriate.

  • Work with borrowers, Charity Bank staff and appointed professional firms to ensure that approved loans are processed quickly and efficiently through to final drawdown.

  • Support the Portfolio Management Unit in the production of annual reviews by seeking answers to questions where appropriate. At all times maintain the relationship with the borrower. Identify borrowers who are or may be suffering credit stress and who represent an actual or potentially impaired exposure for Charity Bank and support the Credit Team in any work-out action that may be required.

  • Actively manage a portfolio of borrowers.

Person Specification 

Experience

Essential

  • 5 years’ relevant experience with proven track record in not-for-profit or SME loans business development

  • Proven experience of negotiating and influencing at a senior level

  • Proven skills in credit and financial analysis in a banking environment

  • Proven experience of both property development finance and syndicated lending and associated legal documentation

  • Understanding of relevant regulatory frameworks and practices

Desirable

  • Existing networks in the UK charity and social enterprise space

  • Understanding of the needs of and issues facing social sector loan applicants

Attainments

  • Professional training in commercial lending and/or higher education in a business discipline
