About the Centre for Public Impact (CPI)
At CPI we partner with governments, public servants and the diverse network of changemakers leading the charge to reimagine government so that it works for everyone. In the process, these pioneers are challenging the longstanding beliefs, values and principles that underpin government action and seeking to promote a more systemic, human approach that is oriented towards learning.
A global not-for-profit organisation founded by the Boston Consulting Group, we act as a learning partner for governments, public servants, and the diverse network of changemakers who are leading the charge to reimagine government. We work with them to hold space to collectively make sense of the complex challenges we face and drive meaningful change through learning and experimentation. We have regional teams in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, and India as well as a Global Hub team that provides people and culture, operational, and communications support across the regions.
CPI’s core values are:
courageous - we have the courage to speak the truth, to challenge without fear and tackle the difficult questions
respectful - we respect differences, we seek to understand them and we look out for one another
optimistic - we are positive about what we and governments can do for our societies
inclusive - we are non partisan, we work together and seek ideas and solutions across the divides
What You’ll Be Doing
Do you believe a story can change the world?
We firmly believe that stories have a vital role to play in supporting the systems change we believe is necessary so that government can work for all of us. Stories can help us make new connections, see different viewpoints and reframe situations. They weave threads of meaning between disparate parts, people and places. They connect our heads to our hearts, promoting empathy and providing a conduit for our emotional selves. They enable us to see beyond the here and now to reveal imagined futures or to explore shared past.
Building on our recent work exploring storytelling for systems change, we are now seeking an experienced storyteller and systems thinker who can help us to better incorporate the power of storytelling across our entire portfolio. The successful candidate will work in partnership with CPI's four regional teams as well as our cross-regional initiatives to explore how storytelling can inform both the sensemaking and action-learning aspects of our role as a learning partner. In partnership with CPI’s programme teams this individual will work directly with our partners to support them in their storytelling journeys through coaching, skill-building, and practical support. In addition, they will take responsibility for CPI's own communications strategy, ensuring that we orient our own storytelling around the same set of principles and that the stories of change we are seeing emerge connect with our growing community of government changemakers.
The Director of Storytelling & Communications will report to the Executive Director and lead and coordinate a small team of communications professionals currently based in the US and the UK.
CORE ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Core responsibilities for this role include:
Acting as the chief storyteller, which would involve:
Building capacity and understanding internally at CPI around how to use language, stories and metaphor as a tool to advance our vision for government.
Working with CPI teams to support them to build the storytelling literacy of our partners.
Identifying and sharing stories of our emerging vision for government in action.
Building new partnerships and expanding current partnerships focused on our previous “storytelling for systems change” work.
Setting the worldwide communications strategy and brand for CPI in collaboration with our regional teams and cross-regional initiatives, ensuring that we’re speaking with one voice and tailoring messages locally as needed.
Managing CPI’s overall brand, including advancing our vision for government, monitoring CPI’s public reputation, managing communications risks where they emerge, and balancing proactive and responsive stances with our communications partners around the world including serving as a spokesperson where called for.
Leading the global communications team, currently based in the US and UK, as well as coordinating with external contributors, partners, and agencies on both storytelling and channel strategy for reaching key audiences.
Collaborating with our colleagues in Global Hub (finance, operations, and people & culture), CPI’s Global Strategy and Impact Committee, and CPI’s Global Operating Committee to ensure alignment and coordination among our globally focused functions and teams.
Leading on global events and partnerships that advance the story of CPI’s work.
Pursuing earned and paid media strategies and preparing spokespeople for media engagements to help build CPI’s profile.
Working across teams to nurture and grow our community of government changemakers to advance our reach and influence new audiences.
