About the role

Working Families is the UK’s national charity for working parents and carers. Our mission is to remove the barriers that people with caring responsibilities face in the workplace.

This is a key role in the CEO’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT), responsible for developing and implementing communications, marketing, and fundraising plans that support the charity’s mission, growth, and organisational strategy. You will lead on creating innovative communications content and compelling messaging across a broad spectrum of channels and media, building our brand and leading to increased awareness, revenue, and relevance among our target audiences.

Key responsibilities:

Communications, Marketing, and Fundraising

  • Creating and implementing communications and fundraising plans that further the charity’s objectives, using KPIs to measure success and areas of improvement

  • Leading on Working Families’ major campaigns and initiatives (e.g. National Work Life Week and the Working Families Index)—developing project plans, delegating responsibilities across the team and wider organisation, and maximising media coverage

  • Maintaining a unified brand for the organisation, which will enable it to have a strong presence in the markets it enters.

  • Overseeing the development of the regular giving and major donor fundraising plans, as well as fundraising campaigns

  • Overseeing the development and management of the website—including keeping content up to date and appropriate, making improvements to functionality, gathering feedback from users, and making recommendations on maximising its potential.

  • Overseeing Working Families’ social media channels, ensuring they’re being used to their full potential

  • Managing proactive and reactive media outreach

  • Overseeing Working Families’ e-mail marketing platform, ensuring that audiences are targeted and segmented appropriately.

  • Overseeing the production of Working Families’ annual impact report

  • Capturing, evaluating, and reporting on communications, marketing, and fundraising metrics to inform future strategies and activities

  • Providing marketing and communications support around events, webinars, report launches, major policy calls, and fundraising bids

  • Working with the Employer Services, Legal Advice Services and Policy teams to support new business opportunities and partnerships

  • Overseeing the creation of high-quality remarks, briefings, and presentations for the Chief Executive

  • Line managing the Marketing and Communications team, and the Fundraising Manager

Strategic Involvement

  • Uses communications, marketing and fundraising expertise to help shape the strategic direction of the charity, along with the CEO and the Senior Leadership Team

  • Represents the charity at a senior level, deputising for the Chief Executive as and when required

Governance

  • Drives initiatives to ensure the work of the Marketing and Communications team is communicated internally (including to the charity’s Trustees)

Senior Leadership Team

  • Key contributor to the SLT, sharing accountability for collective decision making and supporting the effective running of the charity.

  • Contributing to strategic and business planning; forecasts, monitors and re-forecasts the Marketing and Communications team’s budget, and individual giving budget.

  • Providing regular updates to the board on KPIs and key marketing, communications, and fundraising activities

  • Serving as an SLT lead on strategic planning, particularly as it relates to brand advancement and messaging. Responsible for creating external-facing materials around Working Families’ strategy

Other

  • Comply with, and fully participate in, all Working Families policies and processes

  • Represent Working Families externally

  • Support and participate in fundraising activities for Working Families

  • Contribute to the wider Working Families team, undertaking any other reasonable duties as directed
