Contract type: Permanent
Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week) and part-time (30 hours per week) will be considered, along with job shares and flexible hours.
Location: Remote, with up to twice-monthly visits to London, travel costs not covered.
Salary: £45,000 per annum pro rata + benefits
Reports to: Chief Executive

About the role
Working Families is the UK’s national charity for working parents and carers. Our mission is to remove the barriers that people with caring responsibilities face in the workplace.
This is a key role in the CEO’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT), responsible for developing and implementing communications, marketing, and fundraising plans that support the charity’s mission, growth, and organisational strategy. You will lead on creating innovative communications content and compelling messaging across a broad spectrum of channels and media, building our brand and leading to increased awareness, revenue, and relevance among our target audiences.
Key responsibilities:
Communications, Marketing, and Fundraising
Creating and implementing communications and fundraising plans that further the charity’s objectives, using KPIs to measure success and areas of improvement
Leading on Working Families’ major campaigns and initiatives (e.g. National Work Life Week and the Working Families Index)—developing project plans, delegating responsibilities across the team and wider organisation, and maximising media coverage
Maintaining a unified brand for the organisation, which will enable it to have a strong presence in the markets it enters.
Overseeing the development of the regular giving and major donor fundraising plans, as well as fundraising campaigns
Overseeing the development and management of the website—including keeping content up to date and appropriate, making improvements to functionality, gathering feedback from users, and making recommendations on maximising its potential.
Overseeing Working Families’ social media channels, ensuring they’re being used to their full potential
Managing proactive and reactive media outreach
Overseeing Working Families’ e-mail marketing platform, ensuring that audiences are targeted and segmented appropriately.
Overseeing the production of Working Families’ annual impact report
Capturing, evaluating, and reporting on communications, marketing, and fundraising metrics to inform future strategies and activities
Providing marketing and communications support around events, webinars, report launches, major policy calls, and fundraising bids
Working with the Employer Services, Legal Advice Services and Policy teams to support new business opportunities and partnerships
Overseeing the creation of high-quality remarks, briefings, and presentations for the Chief Executive
Line managing the Marketing and Communications team, and the Fundraising Manager
Strategic Involvement
Uses communications, marketing and fundraising expertise to help shape the strategic direction of the charity, along with the CEO and the Senior Leadership Team
Represents the charity at a senior level, deputising for the Chief Executive as and when required
Governance
Drives initiatives to ensure the work of the Marketing and Communications team is communicated internally (including to the charity’s Trustees)
Senior Leadership Team
Key contributor to the SLT, sharing accountability for collective decision making and supporting the effective running of the charity.
Contributing to strategic and business planning; forecasts, monitors and re-forecasts the Marketing and Communications team’s budget, and individual giving budget.
Providing regular updates to the board on KPIs and key marketing, communications, and fundraising activities
Serving as an SLT lead on strategic planning, particularly as it relates to brand advancement and messaging. Responsible for creating external-facing materials around Working Families’ strategy
Other
Comply with, and fully participate in, all Working Families policies and processes
Represent Working Families externally
Support and participate in fundraising activities for Working Families
Contribute to the wider Working Families team, undertaking any other reasonable duties as directed
Person specification:
Essential
At least 5 years’ experience working in the field of communications and fundraising and ability to show knowledge on a broad range of activities
A proven track record of success in a high-profile communications and fundraising role within an organisation of comparable scope and complexity
Experience creating and delivering communications, marketing, and fundraising plans that support an organisational strategy
Proven and demonstrable experience of working with a wide range of media, developing media strategies and relations, preparing press releases
Engaging and succinct writing skills, excellent oral communications skills, strong digital skills
Experience in B2B and B2C marketing, as well as building brand awareness
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with and engage decision-makers.
The ability to manage reactive and planned work.
Line management experience, strong people management skills, supporting line reports to thrive
Proven experience of establishing rapport, credibility and collaborative relationships with key customers, partners, and stakeholders at the highest level both internally and externally
Commitment to Working Families’ objectives and values (Collaborative, Practical, Inclusive, Driven)
Ability to manage a budget
Ability to work as part of the Senior Leadership Team of the charity
Desirable
Qualification in marketing, communications, fundraising or a related field
Experience working in the charity or not-for-profit sector
Experience of working with CRM databases
An understanding of the UK’s family-friendly employment rights framework
Ability to engage people with lived experience
