Principal Advisor (Singapore)
The Behavioural Insights Team
- Closing: 11:59pm, 23rd Sep 2022 +08
Job Description
We’re looking for people passionate about applying behavioural insights and evidence to improve the lives of citizens. People with 5+ years experience in government, academia, or consultancy are likely to be good candidates.
About Us
The Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) is a social purpose company that combines two approaches to improve people’s lives and communities. First, we use behavioural science (behavioural economics, social psychology) to design new policy ideas with our partners. Second, we run policy experiments, often using randomised controlled trials (RCTs), to determine the effectiveness of those ideas..
Our Singapore office was launched in September 2016. BIT is a trusted advisor to government agencies in Singapore, working with 8 ministries - for example the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Home Affairs - and many more statutory authorities.
All our staff believe passionately in our company values: always prioritising social impact, empiricism and humility, fresh thinking and collaboration, and public service. As our team in Singapore grows, we are now looking for a Principal Advisor to join us. We provide a supportive environment, offering flexible working arrangements and other policies to ensure the wellbeing of everyone on the team.
About You
We are looking for people who understand what we do, share our values, and are keen to learn and develop their expertise while also developing others around them. The successful applicant should have an excellent knowledge of behavioural science and an understanding of mixed research methods. Experience with business development and capacity building, including training, are also highly desired.
As a Principal Advisor, you will be responsible for:
Leading the design and delivery of behavioural insights projects in the Singapore domestic team’s portfolio;
Taking responsibility for scoping and developing new areas of work in Singapore;
Representing BIT as an expert in behavioural science and/or research methods;
Conducting training and workshops on applied behavioural science methods;
Overseeing staff preparing policy papers, trial protocols, and literature reviews;
Leading high level and sometimes complex client meetings, typically with governments
What makes a great Principal Advisor at BIT?
We are looking for people who understand what we do, share our values, and are keen to learn and develop their expertise. We are looking for candidates with the skills listed below. We expect to provide training and development support in some of the areas.
Behavioural science: You can explain the implications of theoretical concepts such as defaults, loss aversion, and social norms and apply them in public policy contexts
Public policy: You have an understanding of the Singapore public policy landscape and of how governments make decisions, and you think about what makes some policies, programmes and services effective and others impractical.
Experience in qualitative and quantitative research: leading to a solid understanding of ‘causality’ and statistical reasoning: You know that just because sales of sunglasses and ice creams increase at the same time, one does not cause the other. You can also describe how to run a test to prove this.
Work habits and project management: You can manage your own time and that of your colleagues to produce high quality work within a defined timeline and budget
Managing and developing yourself at work: You demonstrate high self-awareness and regularly self-reflect. You are aware of the impact that your actions and words have on those around you. You are resilient and accept responsibility for decisions whether they achieve the desired outcome or not.
Supporting and developing others: You are supportive and energise people to perform at their best. You care about the success, development, and wellbeing of others and can have meaningful (and sometimes difficult!) conversations.
Winning new work and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships: You are a good listener, attentive to the objectives and requirements of the organisation seeking advice from BIT, identifying problems, determining the appropriate research methodology with support from our specialist researchers and advising organisations based on these findings.
Clear and effective communications: You are a good teacher and presenter, and can explain complex topics in simple terms. You can lead a workshop or presentation and you write clearly and concisely.
Why work for BIT?

You will work with the best behavioural and social scientists to understand motivators of behaviour and to lead, design, and test behavioural experiments to advance social change;
