Job Description

The UN Global Compact Network UK is a multi-stakeholder initiative connecting UK companies to the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest responsible business initiative. The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, rooted in UN treaties, provide a robust foundation for corporate sustainability and business action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN Global Compact Network UK has over 700 participating companies and we are growing quickly. Our mission is to promote sustainability leadership to create a world we want to live and do business in, by inspiring ambition, enabling action and collaborating to shape the business environment.

Our work is guided by the core values of the UN – Integrity, Professionalism and Respect for Diversity – and nine additional values and behaviours of the UN Global Compact. Find out more here.

We are seeking Interns to support the work of our Programmes and Participant Engagement Teams to advance our mission.

We offer full-time paid internships with the possibility of extension and/or conversion into permanent roles.

Please note that while this role is within the UN Global Compact Network UK Secretariat, the successful candidate will not be formally employed by the United Nations. You can find information about the UN Global Compact Network UK's governance here.

We are looking for:

  • Someone with knowledge of the UN Global Compact and the corporate sustainability agenda more generally. Understanding our Network participants' needs and our unique value proposition is essential.

  • Someone with impeccable business writing skills and attention to detail.

  • Someone that is well organised, as you will be working on multiple projects concurrently.

  • Someone that has a "customer service orientation" and can anticipate the needs of colleagues and external stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with planning and delivering virtual and in-person events would be a bonus.

Working at the UN Global Compact Network UK is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking to develop a career in the field of corporate sustainability.

During your internship:

We'll need you to get settled quickly. Through online training and meetings with relevant colleagues, we'll help you to become familiar with our way of working and all the programming offered by the UN Global Compact Network UK and our colleagues at HQ and around the world.

After your onboarding, you might be asked to engage in a range of tasks including assisting with organising events (developing agendas, researching speakers, etc), managing social media engagement, contributing to the Network’s monthly newsletter, generating website content, or responding to inquiries from Network Participants.

What are the next steps?

If you proceed with your application, you'll be asked to complete an equal opportunities questionnaire. The main reason we are using the Applied platform is to eliminate bias from our hiring process, so it is really important that we have this information so we can see if it is working. We will only ever see stats about groups and never about you; answering these questions will never impact your application.

Next, we'll collect some essential admin information.

Finally, we will ask you to answer four questions designed to test your ability to do the job. Please give it your best effort, your scores on these questions will be the primary consideration in whether you are invited for an interview. To avoid bias, we do not look at CVs until later in the process.

Every application will be scored, and you will receive feedback.

Good luck!
