Job Description

The UN Global Compact Network UK (GCN UK) is part of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest responsible business initiative. We connect UK companies and other organisations to a global movement dedicated to driving sustainable growth. We promote practical sustainability leadership, share knowledge across sectors, and shape the business environment to create a world we want to live and do business in.

The UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles, rooted in UN treaties, provide a robust foundation from which we lead UK business action on the Global Goals, also called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our mission is to turn global momentum on sustainability into practical local action.

Our strategic plan has three pillars:

·        Inspiring business ambition to deliver the Global Goals

·        Enabling practical action for sustainable business growth

·        Shaping a responsible business environment

The UK Network Secretariat work is guided by the core values of the UN – Integrity, Professionalism and Respect for Diversity – and nine additional values and behaviours of the UN Global Compact. You can find information about the UN Global Compact Network UK's governance here: https://www.unglobalcompact.org.uk/about-the-uk-network/governance/. We are also a Living Wage Employer: https://www.livingwage.org.uk/

The Network has over 400 participating companies and we are growing quickly. We are seeking Interns to support the work of our Programmes (Global Goals, Climate Action, or Business & Human Rights) and Participant Engagement Teams to advance our mission. By inspiring and enabling businesses to operate in line with our Principles, we are helping the world to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.

We offer full-time internships with the possibility of extension and/or conversion into permanent roles. Please note that while this role is within the UN Global Compact Network UK Secretariat, the successful candidate will not be formally employed by the United Nations.

We are looking for:

  • Someone with knowledge of the UN Global Compact and the corporate sustainability agenda more generally. Understanding our Network participants' needs and our unique value proposition is essential.

  • Someone with impeccable business writing skills and attention to detail.

  • Someone that is well organised, as you will be working on multiple projects concurrently.

  • Someone that has a "customer service orientation" and is able to anticipate the needs of colleagues and external stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with planning and delivering virtual and in-person events would be a bonus.

Working at the UN Global Compact Network UK is a great opportunity for someone seeking to develop a career in the field of corporate responsibility and sustainable development.

During your internship:

We'll need you to get settled quickly. Through online training and meetings with relevant colleagues, we'll help you to become familiar with our way of working and all the programming offered by the UN Global Compact Network UK and our colleagues at HQ and around the world.

After your onboarding, you might be asked to engage in a range of tasks including assisting with organising events (developing agendas, researching speakers, etc), managing social media engagment, contributing to the Network’s monthly newsletter, generating website content, or responding to inquiries from Network Participants.

What are next steps?

If you proceed with your application, you'll be asked to complete an equal opportunities questionnaire. The main reason we're using the Applied platform is to eliminate bias from our hiring process, so it's really important that we have this information so we can see if it's working. We will only ever see stats about groups and never about you; answering these questions will never have an impact on your application.

Next we'll collect some essential admin information.

Finally, we will ask you to answer four questions designed to test your ability to do the job. Please give it your best effort, your scores on these questions will be the primary consideration in whether you are invited for an interview. To avoid bias, we don't look at CVs until later in the process.

Every application will be scored, and you will receive feedback.

Good luck!
