Job Description

Turn2us is a national charity tackling financial insecurity and its structural causes. We work with co-producers and partners to provide people in financial crisis with the means and agency to get back on their feet, build resilience, move forward with their lives and thrive.

As the Supporter Engagement & Legacy Manager you will play a key role as we seek to reignite our legacy marketing programme and grow overall individual giving income to help ensure long-term support for those facing financial difficulty. You will be responsible for the project management and implementation of all supporter engagement activity, acquisition, and legacy marketing activities, ensuring all activity is optimised and campaigns include enhanced digital and social media content.  

Reporting to the Co-Heads of Supporter Engagement and managing the Supporter Engagement Officer, you will develop a multi-year plan to rebuild legacy income and a pipeline of legacy supporters, including re-engaging the EFH care home staff and major donors.

You will be responsible for supporting the strategic direction, operational plans and effective management of Turn2us’s giving programmes from individuals including appeals, regular giving, and legacies, maximising net income from new and existing income streams.

The successful candidate will have experience of managing direct marketing campaigns in a charity environment as well as proven ability to manage successful legacy marketing campaigns. They will have significant experience stewarding individuals and legacy supporters and be adept at communicating the impact of donations, as well as having line management experience. The ability to make a strong case for supporting Turn2us’ key areas of work is crucial, as is an aptitude for proactively increasing acquisition and retention rates.

The post holder will also be a self-starter who is comfortable building new strategies from a relatively small pool of supporters and is experienced testing different tactics to establish the best practice for Turn2us.

Job Title: Supporter Engagement & Legacy Manager

Department: Supporter Engagement Team, Income & External Affairs Directorate

Purpose of the Role:        

You will be responsible for supporting the strategic direction, operational plans and effective management of Turn2us’s giving programmes from individuals including appeals, regular giving, and legacies, maximising net income from new and existing income streams.

The Supporter Engagement & Legacy Manager will play a key role as we seek to reignite our legacy programme and grow overall Individual Giving income to help ensure long-term support for those facing financial difficulty.

This role will focus on creating a new multi-year strategy to build and manage a new legacy programme for Turn2us, in addition to growing awareness and supporters in our legacy pipeline, as well as working with the Head of Philanthropy to create a plan of stewardship activities and events for our legacy and wider supporter groups.

You will be responsible for the project management and implementation of all supporter engagement activity, acquisition, and legacy marketing activities, ensuring all activity is optimised and campaigns include enhanced digital and social media content.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

1. Work with the Co-Heads of Supporter Engagement to plan and oversee retention and acquisition campaigns to ensure they are delivered to a high quality, and meet income and expenditure targets. Create KPIs and income targets, and measure and report on progress against the Individual Giving and Legacy Strategy, making data-driven decisions, and adjusting the approach as required. 

  • Further the Individual Giving and Legacy Strategy ensuring that Digital response is optimised as a primary opportunity to respond.

  • Work with the Co-Heads of Supporter Engagement to develop and implement a multi-year Individual Giving and Legacy Strategy to build a strong legacy pipeline, ensuring annual income targets are consistently met or exceeded and that funds raised support Turn2us priorities. 

  • Help develop a multi-year Individual Giving and Legacy Strategy encompassing tailored legacy marketing and outreach activities to existing supporter & audience groups, major donors, and key partners like EFHL, County Committees and Royal London; ensuring that the strategy supports and meets the goals of the wider organisation’s overall strategic plan. 

  • Work with the Head of Philanthropy to develop key communications and activities that demonstrate the impact of major gifts to major supporters, working closely with the Director of Income and External Affairs and colleagues across the organisation. 

  • Ensure close working across the organisation, and in particular with the Programmes & Partnerships Directorate, and Impact, Digital & Data Directorate, to create innovative ways to demonstrate impact and build collaborative approaches to funding. 

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on sector and market trends and the legal environment impacting legacy fundraising, and ensure compliance with standards determined by Fundraising Regulator and others.  

  • Create a legacy stewardship plan and manage the portfolio of legacy supporters and prospects to secure and retain legacy gifts. 

  • Create clear supporter journeys for new and existing supporters, legacy donors and prospects, partnering across the Income & External Affairs Directorate and developing bespoke events and activities. 

  • Write and coordinate the delivery of persuasive legacy marketing, cultivation and stewardship materials which engage prospects and articulate the value, impact and importance of Turn2us’ work. 

  • Maintain meticulous records of all donor and prospect activities on our CRM and work closely with the Legacy Administrator to ensure all income is properly received, recorded and reported on in both finance and supporter databases.  

  • Ensure that commitments made are deliverable and delivered. 

  • Coordinate and communicate approaches and actions with key stakeholders and colleagues where appropriate.

  • Manage and develop the Supporter Engagement Officer, carrying out regular supervision meetings and annual appraisals.

2. Build excellent working relationships with colleagues across the organisation, including senior leadership and key partners. 

  • Strengthen and create new working relationships with key partners, including EFHL, County Committee members, Royal London and other partners to create strategic legacy opportunities.  

  • Work with other members of the Income Generation team to create a considered, long-term strategy to improve joint communications with EFHL and to foster new relationships from the care home residents and families.

  • Proactively engage with counterparts from the Programmes & Partnerships Directorate, and Impact, Digital & Data Directorate, to develop innovating legacy communications and ideas. 

  • Work with others in the Income & External Affairs Directorate and the Co-production Manager to build a bank of personal stories from both users and supporters to create compelling supporter appeals and communications.

3. Adhere to internal processes and procedures for fundraising, reporting, financial management, and information management across the Philanthropy Team.  

  • Be accountable for ensuring that the CRM database is maintained and updated correctly.

  • Be responsible for ensuring all legacy activities and communications follow appropriate due diligence processes. 

  • Manage expenditure and work with the Co-Heads of Supporter Engagement on budget management and pipeline reporting.

  • Work with the Legacy Administrator to update quarterly income forecasts and monthly pipeline reports. 

4. Contribute to a supportive, high-performing, and collaborative working culture within the Directorate to meet our shared income targets and KPIs and help build a culture of learning and improvement.  

  • Work across the Directorate to identify areas of collaboration for the whole programme and other shared events and activities that support overall donor growth and stewardship. 

  • Contribute to process improvements, best practices, and other resources leading to improved quality of funding approaches. 

  • Support the Co-Heads of Supporter Engagement in the implementation of the Individual Giving and Legacy Strategy. 

  • Adhere to all charity organisation standards, policies and procedures.  

  • Comply with the data protection regulations, ensuring that information on prospects and donors remains confidential. 

  • Carry out our business activities in a way which complies with our policies on safeguarding and EDI.

Person Specification

Skills:         

  • Excellent organisation skills, time management and multi-tasking skills.  

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders and a passion for delighting supporters. 

Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of fundraising laws and regulations in relation to data protection and compliance.  

  • Extensive knowledge of the Institute of Fundraising Code of Practice.  

Experience:                

Preferred:

  • Experience of managing direct marketing campaigns in a charity environment as well as direct experience of overseeing a legacy strategy to build or re-invigorate a legacy pipeline. 

  • Experience of managing external agencies and suppliers (creative agencies, telemarketing agencies, copywriters, professional fundraising agencies, media buying).

  • Experience of detailed analysis and evaluation of activities.

  • Experience of developing digital communications.

  • Strong experience of legacy fundraising with a proven track record of meeting or exceeding six or seven figure annual legacy income targets. 

  • An outstanding track record and aptitude for creating meaningful connections with high-value prospects and partners and and ability to navigate sensitive conversations.  

  • Experience planning and executing annual stewardship activities and events. 

  • Extensive experience working with non-fundraising colleagues to strengthen fundraising activity.  

  • Management or mentorship of staff and/or volunteers.  

  • Previous budget and KPI management experience including preparation of annual fundraising strategies, plans and reports.

  • A pro-active self-starter who is comfortable working alone, but can also be a team player with an interest in accomplishing shared goals and the ability to inspire, influence and engage internal and external audiences positively.
