Job Description

About Bethnal Green Ventures

Bethnal Green Ventures (BGV) is Europe’s leading early-stage tech for good VC. We back ambitious founders using technology to tackle big social and environmental problems that aim to radically improve millions of lives. BGV has unrivalled experience and track record investing in and scaling tech for good businesses, generating top-tier returns for investors, as well as significant and measurable impact. BGV is one of the five most active venture capital firms in the UK and has been a B Corp since 2015.

The core BGV team is a small, dynamic bunch of eleven people and we operate as an autonomous part of the impact-focused Connected Asset Management group.  Our wider community includes our investment committee, Venture Partners, 70+ live startups in our portfolio, and over 50 expert mentors in our network. The BGV team works alongside our ventures in our co-working space in central London and helps run the London Tech for Good meetup with around 10,000 members. BGV gives you the benefits of being in a small team whilst being part of a bigger movement.

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced, diligent and proactive person, aligned with our principles,  to join BGV as a senior member of our investment team as we scale up our investment capacity.

The Investment Director will work closely with our Investment Managing Partner and Investment Manager sourcing deals, conducting due diligence and executing investments at accelerator, pre-seed, seed and Series-A stages.  We pride ourselves on the quality of portfolio support we provide and this role involves extensive collaboration with our Portfolio Manager and Venture Partners to help founders scale their tech for good ventures.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with some of Europe’s most successful tech for good ventures. Example companies in our portfolio include Fairphone - the world’s most sustainable smartphone, DrDoctor - a patient platform unlocking effective care, and Organise - the UK’s leading campaigning platform for better conditions at work.

Role requirements

This is an ideal role for somebody with extensive venture investment experience who wants to transition to the impact investment sector. The responsibilities will be varied but will include:

  • Evaluating and executing follow-on investment and exit opportunities, preparing materials for, and participating in Investment Committee meetings.

  • Regularly reviewing and refining BGV’s overall investment strategy to create both positive social impact and top-tier financial returns for our investors.

  • Building great relationships with our portfolio companies; earning their trust and providing meaningful, relevant and practical advice to help them develop and grow their businesses.

  • Maintaining a comprehensive understanding of our portfolio’s financial and impact performance against our investment model and developing strategies to proactively manage it at fund and venture level.

  • Representing BGV externally and acting as an ambassador for BGV.

Who should apply

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • An affinity with BGV’s mission and values and is excited about the opportunity to work with socially and environmentally motivated tech startups.

  • Direct experience of making and managing numerous investments in tech ventures at seed/Series A with demonstrable involvement in securing growth stage investment and/or successful exits.

  • A willingness to perform FCA controlled functions.

In addition the ideal candidate will:

  • Be able to effectively combine a data-driven approach with risk taking and commercial instinct;

  • Demonstrate effective line-management skills with genuine enthusiasm for developing high-performing direct reports;

  • Be team oriented, with a ‘can do’ approach to helping out the wider BGV team where necessary;

  • Possess strong financial modelling skills; and

  • Have practical experience of working closely with legal advisers to negotiate and close investments and a thorough knowledge of relevant legal concepts and deal structures.

Rewards and benefits

  • An amazing experience working alongside startups solving important social and environmental problems.

  • Exposure to our extensive network of founders, mentors and investors.

  • A great work environment and inclusive team culture.

  • Salary of £60,000 - £70,000 depending on experience.
