Unifrog
- Closing: 5:15pm, 11th Dec 2023 GMT
Job Description
Unifrog’s mission
We’re on a mission to level the playing field when it comes to young people finding and applying for their next step after school. We're achieving this by bringing all the available information into one single, impartial, user-friendly platform that helps students to make the best choices, and submit the strongest applications. We also empower teachers and counsellors to manage the progression process effectively. Our outlook is global - we work with schools and universities all over the world, from the US to New Zealand, and from Italy to Hong Kong. We want to make it so that young people can compare every opportunity taught in English, wherever it is in the world, and have all the support they need to make successful applications. We have a clear social purpose, and we’re hugely ambitious. We already work with over half of UK secondary schools, and hundreds of international schools. We are growing rapidly in terms of the number of our customers, in terms of how much they use our platform, and in terms of the breadth of products we offer (check out this video to hear more about the Unifrog platform). Our team is at the heart of our business and is integral to our success. We work hard to foster a culture of openness, happiness and innovation, and we commit to helping every individual learn and grow so that they can reach their full potential. We want to hire talented people, whatever their background. If you are excited by our mission and are ready to work hard, please don’t hesitate to apply. We look forward to hearing from you! We believe in the power of diversity. If you are from an ethnic minority background, we would like to strongly encourage you to apply. In advance of applying if you have any questions about working at Unifrog, please contact our Recruitment Lead, Mhairi (details on our website).
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at Unifrog
Within the company we try to foster a culture of innovation, and a happy working environment, both because this is the right thing to do, and because we think this results in the most effective team. To this end we believe in open communication, celebrating successes, supporting each other, not being afraid to be wrong or to fail, and promoting good ideas wherever they come from.
As a platform that supports teachers and students from a huge variety of backgrounds and is committed to improving social mobility, it’s important that our team and leadership reflects this diversity. This is something we are actively working towards and prioritising. We want to embed diversity, equity and inclusion across everything we do, continually evaluating our policies and practices.
To make sure everyone’s voice is heard and people have the opportunities to learn to be better allies in the workplace, we encourage the team to share what they’re celebrating, facilitate training and group discussions, and seek regular feedback about what more the company could do to help people feel included.
To ensure that our recruitment process is consistent and fair, we anonymise your application and therefore do not see your name, personal, educational or professional background. We also randomise the order of responses. That way no candidate is disproportionately advantaged or disadvantaged by where they show up in the group.
What you’ll do
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) (~3 days per week)
This year we’ve started working with The Unmistakables - an award-winning EDI consultancy - to hear their thoughts on how we can take our next steps in EDI. As our first People and EDI Lead, your role will be to take their recommendations, along with your own ideas and feedback from the team, and work with the People and Leadership teams to bring them to life. Our goal is to make Unifrog an even more equitable, diverse, and inclusive place to work.
This is an opportunity for someone with experience working in EDI to help develop our EDI strategy and make a significant, positive and lasting impact on the experience of the Unifrog team. You’ll have space to develop your own ideas and you’ll be supported all the way by the Head of People and Finance and the wider People team. Plus, you’ll also gain exposure to a variety of interesting projects across Unifrog.
Initial areas of focus:
Work with your line manager and the leadership team to create, update, and share with the team:
An EDI strategy, with goals and objectives for each academic year.
An EDI ambition statement.
A stakeholder map that shows key EDI roles and responsibilities.
A calendar for internal and external EDI updates and events (with significant feed-in from our Internal Communications and Events Lead).
Make sure that our EDI decisions are increasingly informed by data:
With support from your line manager, evaluate what EDI data we have already and what data and insights we need.
Build great relationships across the team to understand their backgrounds and needs, and take on their feedback for how we can continue to improve EDI at Unifrog.
Help organise team surveys and forums, collate feedback from these, and then work with the People and Leadership teams to put these ideas into action.8
Once you’re up and running with these initial responsibilities, you’ll also:
Work with our People and Development Manager to:
Build an EDI training programme that revisits key topics throughout the year. You’ll be responsible for: booking external training; leading some sessions internally with support; and creating follow-up comms and toolkits to reference what was covered.
Review our policies and processes (e.g. our performance management process) to make sure that they are equitable and inclusive.
Work with our Recruitment Lead to:
Make our recruitment processes as inclusive, equitable and accessible as possible.
Work towards our EDI recruitment objectives, particularly around social mobility and diversity of applicants, hires and types of role.
Continue to make EDI a significant and important part of our inductions (e.g. sharing our EDI ambition and why it’s important to us; explaining the ways that the team can give feedback on EDI).
Work with our Internal Communications and Events Lead to plan EDI and wellbeing events and initiatives as part of our comms calendar, and make sure all our team events are inclusive.
In time and with training, provide coaching and advice to our line management team on EDI matters.
Stay across current EDI best practice and work with external stakeholders (e.g. consultants) to make sure we’re continually improving on this front.
People responsibilities (~2 days per week)
You’ll also help us to achieve our People team goal:
To recruit, develop and retain a happy and effective Unifrog team
To improve the efficiency of our internal systems and processes
You don’t necessarily need significant experience in the areas below - if you don’t have lots of relevant experience, we look for readiness and ability to learn. If you’re unsure, please feel free to get in touch.
Main responsibilities:
Employee relations and experience - with support from your line manager, help to foster a positive climate of employee relations, e.g.
Support our team through their probations and identify talent early.
Support line managers with their team’s health and wellbeing (e.g. making reasonable adjustments, providing options for flexibility, signposting support).
Support teams to maintain and strengthen their professional relationships, and help to problem-solve as appropriate.
Health & safety and safeguarding - keep our policies up to date, complete risk assessments and DBS checks, and support our Marketing and Events team to make sure safeguarding is considered for all our partner-facing events (in-person and virtual).
Depending on your skills and interests, you’ll also have the chance to take part in a variety of different People projects, from employee engagement to researching and rolling out new team policies.
Working together
You’ll be part of our People team alongside our: People Assistant, Recruitment Lead, People and Development Manager, Internal Communications and Events Lead, and Head of People and Finance.
You’ll also regularly work with a variety of other team members, especially the leadership team. You’ll need to be able to build strong professional relationships with them to help deliver an excellent employee experience.
