Job Description

We are recruiting for an Interim Head of New Ventures

About Nesta

We are Nesta, the UK’s innovation agency for social good. We design, test and scale solutions to society’s biggest problems. Our three missions are to give every child a fair start, help people live healthy lives, and create a sustainable future where the economy works for both people and the planet.

For over 20 years, we have worked to support, encourage and inspire innovation. We work in three roles: as an innovation partner working with frontline organisations to design and test new solutions, as a venture builder supporting new and early stage businesses, and as a system shaper creating the conditions for innovation.

Harnessing the rigour of science and the creativity of design, we work relentlessly to change millions of lives for the better. Find out more at nesta.org.uk.

How will an interim Head of New Ventures contribute to Nesta’s success?

Your role as interim Head of New Ventures is to help deliver - together with our external partner -  a world-class impact venture studio. The studio builds new businesses that have the potential to change the game in our three innovation missions: ‘A Fairer Start’, focused on closing the attainment gap amongst pre school age children, ‘A Healthy Life’, focused on creating a healthier food environment, and ‘A Sustainable Future’, focused on reducing carbon emissions in the home. During your time in the role you will support the build of new businesses in A Healthy Life and work with our existing portfolio of ventures in A Sustainable Future, doing everything you can to ensure their ongoing success, drawing on Nesta’s and our partner’s knowledge, networks and resources.

The role

As interim Head of New Ventures, you’ll take over the day-to-day running of the Mission Studio partnership, working closely with Nesta’s Chief Strategy Officer and our external partner to bring our venture-building ambitions to life. You’ll work with Mission and Practice teams across Nesta to identify where innovation in the form of new ventures can change the game, and you’ll help give these new ventures the best possible start by helping bring the best of Nesta and the external partner to bear on the development and launch of these ventures. You’ll play a pivotal role in channeling insights from Nesta’s cutting-edge research and experimentation in each mission area into the venture-building process, providing access to Nesta’s insights and networks, and potentially giving access to early users to refine solutions or smoothing the way to market.

The Venture Studio is part of our Strategy Department, and as such you will work closely with other teams in the department under the supervision of the CSO. These teams are the Discovery Hub, which helps keep Nesta at the cutting edge of innovation and find new and better ways of achieving our goals, and the Strategy Unit which exists to help ensure Nesta ultimately delivers on its 2030 strategy, bringing our strategy to life and pushing organisational performance forward.

The successful candidate will have direct experience in a fast-paced entrepreneurial setting, and in building and working in strategic partnerships.
