Job Description

About Us

Aquila is a fast-growing startup working on wireless laser energy transmission systems to power sectors underserved by traditional grid infrastructure, such as the aerospace industry. We're backed by some of the best investors in the world, including Blackbird, Outset and Possible, and we're working with the most advanced aerospace organisations to develop novel and exciting capabilities. Our Aotearoa subsidiary, Eagleworks Limited, builds transmission technologies out of our laser development facilities in Parnell.

We believe in the power of teamwork and collaboration. We are a dynamic and supportive team of 'eagles', sharing a passion for pushing the boundaries of what is possible. We are committed to creating a great future for humanity and are looking for exceptional people to join us on this journey.

The Role

As an electronics engineer at Aquila, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology that has the potential to change how we distribute energy around the world. Unlocking sustainable aviation, maritime and transportation.

Electronics testing and integration are crucial to building and operating optical energy networks safely and effectively at scale. This work will ensure we can collect and transmit relevant data between integrated circuits and radio systems to operate our transmission and safety systems.

This position involves applying your aptitude, curiosity, and energy to solve broad, integrated power electronics problems.

Who we're looking for

  • Able to self-teach and learn on the job. We are doing something entirely new, so we discover new things together and learn.

  • Resourceful and creative in finding easy or "off-the-shelf" solutions to common problems. E.g. radio systems between UAVs and our targeting computer.

Responsibilities:

  • Building integrated test electronics

  • Helping to develop an aerospace-grade maximum power point tracker

  • Developing, testing and integrating laser safety system electronics

  • Writing firmware for our integrated electronics

  • Drone sensor data collection and component programming

  • Integrating radio communications with our power receiver module

  • Adaptive optics electronics sensing and programming

We love candidates with the following qualifications (but you don't need to meet all of them)

  • Evidence of exceptional aptitude in power electronics

  • Experience in the aerospace industry or other highly dynamic environments

  • Proficiency in circuit simulation and design software.

  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to power electronics engineering

We also love candidates who share

Aquila Perks & Benefits

  • We are genuinely close as a team. Quarterly offsite hiking through beautiful Australian and Aotearoa landscapes, annual end-of-year festivals, referee bonuses, birthday celebrations and much more!

  • Great, decked-out office! Both offices are in inclusive, community-oriented, buzzing startup hubs full of cutting-edge hardware!

  • We take flexible working seriously!  Work from an overseas cafe if you only need your laptop, and if you've had a long day or worked on a weekend - we want you to take that time back for yourself.

  • Learning and development are a priority! We are all learning because we are working on the unknown. Hence, Aquila supports employee development with an annual personal learning budget.

We want to hear from you if you're a budding world-class electronics engineer hungry to make a massive impact! Aquila welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. Join our team and help us build an infinitely scalable energy network that powers a more abundant, limitless, and sustainable future.

This role could be part-time or full-time and will continue for at least 10 weeks.
