Job Description

Finance Manager

Startmate is growing rapidly and we looking to hire a Finance Manager to help us grow even faster! You will be working closely with the Head of Operations and Finance to build a finance function that lets us realise our massive ambitions.

About the Role

  • Salary Range: $100k - $140k + super + equity

  • Reporting to Head of Operations and Finance - Ben Vickers

We want to make Australia and New Zealand the best place in the world to build a startup. On this journey, we have to tackle some hairy challenges, and a high performing finance function is mission-critical:

  • Investments: we have just launched our $30m Continuity Fund to continue backing our extraordinary portfolio into the future. We already have one of the largest portfolios (185+ companies) and every year we invest in more startups than most funds do in a decade.

  • Fellowships: we are expanding our Fellowship programs help even more talented, ambitious people from a multitude of backgrounds gain the network and skills needed to thrive in the startup world.

  • Startmate City: we can’t say too much at this stage, but let’s just say Startmate might have a city soon.

Here is a brief overview of some of the work you might be responsible for (depending on your background and level of experience). You don’t have to know how to do all of these yet (we will teach you) but within a year, you will look at this list and say: “I have built and now manage every one of these”.

  • Financial reporting - ensuring that all our financial reporting is accurate and providing users with the information they need (For example: preparing annual financial statements for our funds and corporate entities, managing the quarterly portfolio valuations, reporting on fund performance)

  • Tax compliance and reporting - ensuring that all our tax obligations are met and our tax reporting is correct and on time, every time. (Some of our tax obligations are: Australian company income tax, GST, AMIT (AIIRs and AMMAs), FATCA/CRS, PFIC).

  • Financial planning and analysis - helping us to understand our key business drivers, building financial budgets and models to ensure our teams can make fully informed decisions, and preparing internal reporting on our progress towards our goals.

  • Finance operations - ensuring all our data and financial process are fundamentally sound and operating well (for example: period-end closure, cash and balance sheet reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, fund receipts and distributions, treasury).

  • Compliance management- we operate in a high compliance environment, and some of these obligations relate to directly finance or depend on finance. You will ensure we comply with every single one of them.

  • Scaling our processes - by any measure we are growing very rapidly (revenue, FTEs, funds under management, number of investments). You will be building finance processes that can scale with the business. (For example: Is our ‘order to cash’ process scalable? Is our staff reimbursements process scalable and in line with our values?)

Position Requirements

You don’t need to be a fully qualified Chartered Accountant or CPA, but should at least be working towards those accreditations.

Your background is less important than the key skills, which might include:

  • An operational mindset: we all do whatever is necessary to get the job done. No task is beneath us.

  • Knowledge of accounting processes and financial reporting.

  • Knowledge of taxation and tax compliance.

  • Some familiarity with the financial and legal workings of funds management.

  • An understanding of and ability to navigate the regulatory frameworks within which Startmate operates;

  • Some interest or experience dealing with startups (this could be in your current role, past roles, being involved in accelerator programs or other startup communities);

If you are still studying, we will support you by giving providing study leave and reimbursing course fees.
