Job Description

The Philharmonia Orchestra is seeking to appoint a Marketing & Press Officer to lead on marketing and press campaigns for: concerts in all residency venues (Basingstoke, Bedford, Canterbury, Leicester, Garsington Opera, Three Choirs); Learning & Engagement activities; international touring engagements.

The role will be focused on creating marketing and press campaigns that deliver sales and income, as well as audience growth and engagement. The successful candidate will have experience in developing campaigns using the full marketing-mix and media/press channels. Experience in post-campaign analysis and insight is essential, as this role will be responsible for providing crucial information for fundraising reports and applications.

Importantly, this role works with a wide variety of stakeholders, partners, and audiences, so the candidate must be an excellent communicator, who is able to juggle many projects, and thrives on developing relationships with diverse groups.

There will be an expectation to attend a variety of Philharmonia concerts and activities throughout the UK.

Role and Responsibilities

Residency concerts

  • Develop and implement marketing and press strategies and campaigns that deliver (and exceed) sales and income targets and deliver audience engagement, growth, and diversification

  • Devise an annual timeline of promotion, that works alongside all other marketing campaigns

  • Work with the Senior Digital Marketing Manager to develop activity that utilises all online channels and maximises engagement and growth

  • Create a plan for the sale of Philharmonia Records at concerts, implement and track sales

  • Support the Programme Editor in the production of programmes, supply copy and other editorial materials and lead on brand presence at the venues

  • Analyse effectiveness of all marketing and press activities and report back to key stakeholders

  • Analyse audience engagement and provide information for fundraising reports and applications, as required

  • Develop and circulate weekly sales reports and summaries

  • Lead on Box Office relationships with the venues, working with the Philharmonia Customer Relations & Ticketing Manager to capture and store data, adhering to data compliance regulations

Learning & Engagement activities

  • Devise and implement marketing campaigns for Composers Academy and the associated Music of Today series at Southbank Centre, which deliver against set audience targets

  • Work on key Learning & Engagement activities (for example, Orchestra Unwrapped, Hear & Now, and Symphonize) and audience development initiatives (for example, The Guest List) across the UK

  • Report on audience attendance and engagement, with a specific emphasis on growth and diversification

  • Provide relevant information for fundraising reports and applications, as required

  • With the Director of Marketing & Comms create a promotional pack, which showcases the key successes and highlights of the programme, and the audience reached, and helps to build the profile of L&E work

International touring and engagements

  • With the Director of Marketing & Comms develop a marketing and press strategy and plan that builds profile and awareness for international touring and aids fundraising

  • Identify opportunities to bring international critics and journalists to the UK to build awareness

  • Create pitch documents for representative agents, which helps to sell the Orchestra in various territories

Press

  • Manage the relationship with the external press agency – providing them with materials and information for press releases, and helping to coordinate interviews and exclusives, which support the promotion of all Philharmonia activities

  • Create press releases for residency concerts and activities (and any other ad hoc activity), as appropriate

  • Act as a central contact for press enquiries and maintain the Orchestra’s press materials

  • Work with the Marketing team to coordinate the press release schedule

  • With the Director of Marketing & Comms, develop the Philharmonia’s profile via relationships with classical music writers, critics, broadcasters and editors

Other

  • Support the Customer Relations & Ticketing Manager in taking bookings for London and Bedford Season concerts, as required

  • Attend concerts in across the UK and in London on a rota basis

  • Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required by the Company
