Job Description

Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join The Partnerships and Development Team as our a Philanthropy Development Assistant (Apprentice). You will play a key part in providing assistance to the Philanthropy and Development Team in raising funds from individuals, trusts & foundations and other partnership opportunities, all in support of the agreed fundraising priorities and Historic England’s mission.

You’ll be involved in assisting fundraising activity across the Partnerships and Development Team, in order to enable innovative new projects and programmes helping Historic England to protect heritage and improve lives, and will help the team through the identification, evaluation, profiling and tracking of prospects for fundraising.

We need you to join us and bring your enthusiasm for culture and heritage, your interest in fundraising, and your experience of administration (or willingness to learn) to contribute to the work of the Partnerships and Development Team, which includes oversight of The Historic England Foundation.  Along with the Partnerships and Development Team Officers, you will be involved in the development and ongoing upkeep of the Historic England Foundation website, ensuring the fundraising content on here and the main Historic England website is inspiring, engaging and kept up-to-date.

You’ll also be required to maintain and improve the team’s Customer Relationship Management database (CRM), ensuring compliance with all relevant data protection policies and legislation.

What you will be doing

Develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of the work of Historic England.

Assist all members of the Partnerships and Development Team to identify, evaluate, profile and track prospects ensuring all activity is tracked on Microsoft Dynamics. 

Produce research profiles, biographic notes and briefings for the Head of Partnerships and Development, Philanthropy Development Manager, Historic England’s Executive Team, Chairman and Commissioners.

Maintain an effective fundraising database, recording on it all fundraising information in accordance with departmental protocols and in compliance with GDPR and internal policies.

Support the Partnerships and Development Team to ensure effective stewardship of funders and play an active role in the production of reports and the delivery of benefits.

You will be involved in fundraising and engagement events as required.  Arrange the production of invitations and follow-up or thank you letters as required.

The key areas you will cover in Partnerships & Philanthropy team are:

  • Administrative assistance surrounding funders and donors

  • Funder research

  • Due diligence research and reports

  • Correspondence with existing and prospective funders

You will be involved in making bookings for travel, hotel accommodation and meeting rooms and arrange refreshments as required.

Act as a representative of Historic England both externally and internally, contributing to the overall strategy of the Partnerships and Development Team.

What we are looking for

  • An interest in and knowledge of charitable fundraising, ideally in the cultural, museums or heritage sectors

  • An interest in research processes and the value of data

  • Experience of administrative processes and good levels of written communication

  • Experience of supporting events or meetings, both logistically and administratively

  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels and with external stakeholders

  • A good level of experience in using common IT packages such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • A professional and engaging relationship-builder.
