Head of Communications for Protect 

£46,300 -£51,500 PA depending on experience  

Location: Bethnal Green London 

Hours: 24-37.5 hours a week, hybrid working with expectation of 2 days in the office per week 

Protect, the UK’s leading Charity on whistleblowing, is looking to recruit a new Head of Communications. 

You will be joining a talented team that provides free legal advice to thousands of whistleblowers, works with employers to create effective whistleblowing arrangements and campaigns for better legal reform to ensure better protections for those who speak out about wrongdoing at work. 

We are looking for a dynamic and creative person to help ensure Protect’s message about the positive impact whistleblowing can have, the challenges whistleblowers face and how things can change is featured regularly across UK consumer and trade media. 

You will be instrumental in developing Protect’s voice, look and feel, and will manage the communications strategy to drive engagement across media (traditional and digital), website and social media channels.   

We are looking for someone with an understanding of the law and great contacts who will create a network of journalists to raise the charity’s profile and ensure that they write about our work.  

The role will report into Protect’s  Director of Policy and Communications, working closely with both the Business Support and Legal Directors 

Responsibilities: 

  • Create and deliver Protect’s media and social media engagement strategy supporting the charities' strategic goal of increasing the charity’s profile and publicising our work. 

  • Oversee the charity’s monitoring of the news to spot opportunities for Protect to increase our profile and discuss our work. 

  • Oversee Protect’s media commentary in the form of media quotes, articles, blogs and ensuring staff are prepared for media appearances. 

  • Build a network of relationships with key journalists including print, broadcast and online channels to deliver coverage for the charities' research and work. 

  • Taking the lead to deliver World Whistleblower Day working with the Business Support team and Policy teams to create webinars, articles, website content etc. 

  • Oversee the look, brand and tone of voice of Protect ensuring content for the website and social media channels are up to date.  

  • Line manage the Communications and Events Officer. 

The successful candidate will have the following: 

  • Existing documented right to work in the UK  

  • The ideal candidate will have at least three years’ experience in media, journalism, communication (in either business or the voluntary sector) and/or policy work.  

  • Fluent English
