Job Description

ROLE 

Luminate is seeking an experienced professional who is dedicated to digital governance, tech governance, and civic space strengthening in Asia. The candidate will support the Asia team’s work in Indonesia and in regional Asia, with a specific focus on supporting organisations working on freedom of expression, digital governance, and tech accountability. 

In Asia, Luminate seeks to address key challenges related to freedom of expression, digital governance, information integrity, and tech accountability. The Associate will be an integral member of the Asia regional program team, and in some opportunities will be working with diverse team across Luminate.  

The Associate is a mid-level position at Luminate, that will be based in Jakarta, Indonesia and reports to Luminate’s Director for Asia. We expect the incumbent to have pre-existing grant-making experience, and specifically have experience working with civil society organisations in the intersection of freedom of expression, tech governance, and societal impact in Indonesia and Asia.  

 Successful candidates must be based in and have the right to work in Jakarta, Indonesia. Competitive salary and benefits are offered.

RESPONSIBILTIES 

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Building a robust pipeline of future Luminate partners and investments in Asia, with specific focus issues on freedom of expression, digital governance, tech policy, and tech accountability. 

  • Supporting the team and existing partner organizations to monitor activities, performance, and maximize social impact in Luminate’s key areas. 

  • Monitoring key issues associated with Luminate’s efforts in the region and contribute to Luminate’s Asia strategy development. 

Within those key responsibilities, the individual in this role will be expected to focus on: 

  • Scoping out Luminate opportunities in alignment with Luminate’s strategic goals in the region and priority country 

  • Reviewing and analysing grant proposals, organization budgets, conducting necessary diligence on prospect opportunities, and making sound decision of opportunities and investment 

  • Executing grants and investment by processing grants approval and funding process, including preparing all relevant documentations 

  • Maintaining good relationship with partners and other stakeholders in the ecosystem that Luminate is investing in. 

  • Monitoring news, policy development, and ecosystem development connected to Luminate’s strategic goals and report back to the team, as appropriate. 

  • Contributing to Luminate’s Asia strategy by collecting and communicating insights, evidence, data, and strategic reflections, both at the country and regional level 

This role includes some travel, the candidate will have flexibility to travel internationally when required (estimated 20-30 percent).    

 

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Professional experience in philanthropy/grant-making, or experience with non-profit or similar organizations connected to Luminate Asia’s strategic goals 

  • Deep strategic and analytical skills – ability to evaluate proposed opportunities from various perspectives and have appreciation for analytical rigour and clarity 

  • Significant understanding of digital governance and civic space in Indonesia and of tech governance in regional Asia 

  • Familiarity of national and regional policy ecosystem & innovative interventions related to Luminate’s strategic goals 

  • Good communication skills – excellent writing and presentation skills and fluent in English and Bahasa Indonesia, ability to communicate succinctly and clearly 

  • Great interpersonal skills – ability to work collaboratively with colleagues with diverse background and culture from around the world 

  • Experience conducting advocacy work and engaging with policymakers, civil society, and other stakeholders related to Luminate’s strategic goals is an added advantage 

  • University degree associated with Luminate’s strategic goals is highly preferred
