Job Description

Are you seeking real hands-on experience in a rapidly scaling, high-tech startup?

Does the sound of being an on-the-tools software engineer and deep learning mind interest you?

At XY Sense, we’ve engineered a new kind of AI-powered sensor to create safer, smarter workplaces. Having recently closed a $A5M seed funding round (backed by Blackbird Ventures), we are currently looking for some contract level support in our Machine Learning team to assist our rapid growth and the continual improvement of our data analytics offering to our customers.

The Role

This entry-level position will be a pivotal part of upgrading our Machine Learning software stack. You will be applying your skills towards writing, testing and using code in the entire pipeline: training Neural Networks, evaluation, diagnostics, compression and deployment. Ultimately you will be assisting in the process of taking ideas from the drawing board onto our Sensors.

Working underneath expert guidance, this is a great opportunity to develop your understanding of Deep Learning and gain hands-on experience in a rapidly scaling (global) startup blending AI powered analytics and IOT hardware.

The work you’ll do

  • Refactor existing ML project into smaller, modular 'plug and play' repositories

  • Write new unit tests for edge cases and improve existing tests to generate improved coverage of ML modules

  • Upgrade open source ML development tools used in XY Sense’s existing project.

  • Monitor support logs and Jira to remedy bugs in the GPU training pipeline and across the ML repository as they are picked up by clients and the XY team.

  • Strengthen and fix issues in installation and usability of ML repository on non-GPU machines

  • Speed up Pytorch training DataLoader by improving and fixing known issues in existing software code

  • Continuous support for all our ML repositories focusing on and triaging high priority bugs as they are reported

  • Assist with ML dataset preparation

What you’ll need to bring

  • Passionate about writing clean, simple and robust code

  • Good at conceptual thinking and taking ideas through to solutions

  • Self motivated and persistent attitude to be able to work autonomously with light supervision.

  • Team player but also able to work independently

  • Careful with details and keenness to take ownership and maintain the code you produce and manage.

How we’ll structure this role

We can work with you to find the right structure that works for both of us. The workload is large enough to make this a 5-day per week role, but if you have other commitments which means you can only dedicate 3 or 4 days per week, we get that. We are also open to hiring two interns to cover requirements.

This is work that we need to do and value as a company. As a result, this is a paid internship with a rate to be discussed with the right candidate taking into account their experience and mutual role objectives.

A bit more about us

We’re on a mission to use smart sensors and AI powered analytics to create workplaces people love.

Founded in 2016 by Alex Birch and Luke Murray, XY Sense is a Melbourne headquartered technology startup who has created the world’s most advanced workplace sensor. It’s private by design (protecting people’s privacy), has the longest range of any sensor on the market, collects data passively and best of all delivers highly accurate workplace utilisation analytics in real-time.

Why should you care?

We built this ‘first-of-its-kind’ solution because companies around the world are spending billions of dollars every year on empty, un-loved and under-utilised office space. The struggle to find a free meeting room, a desk, or a place to make a phone call, is real and offices are nowhere near as effective as they should be. Our sensor is changing that. Helping companies use data to better plan space, save money, deliver better workplace experiences and in the era of COVID, keep those offices safer.

Plus we’re doing all of that by leveraging really cool tech to build something that’s truly new.

Our founders have previously founded/successfully exited other proptech companies so we know what we’re doing. Our investors think so too. We’re backed by Blackbird Ventures, Australia’s most prominent venture capital fund (Canva, CultureAmp, SafetyCulture).

Sound good? Let's get started.

If you are shortlisted, we’ll invite you to the next step, which includes an initial phone discussion before a more formal interview (virtual or in-person).

Expected duration of this application process: 2-4 weeks
