Job Description

The Archives Assistant will support the Assistant Archivist in the day to day running of the Company Archive, while with particular focus on the appraisal and cataloguing of the newly acquired Egmont Archive.  The HarperCollins Archive Service is responsible for the preservation of the records and history of the company. We provide both a deposit and retrieval service for all Company departments across the UK. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the records of a 200-year-old business and help ensure its longevity. It is a wonderful chance to be part of a busy and growing archive department and be involved in a new project to bring in the records of Egmont Children’s Books.

Core responsibilities

Cataloguing – Egmont Archive Project

  • Creating both detailed and high-level descriptions for the new material as necessary.

  • Weeding and destruction of material based on an agreed retention schedule.

Day to Day Archive Tasks

  • Deposit of new archive boxes and retrieval of requested archive boxes.

  • Creation of social media content and internal communications.

  • General support of the Assistant Archivist in daily, weekly and monthly archive tasks such as answering internal enquiries, research for upcoming anniversaries and events.

Experience required

  • A degree in a relevant subject or relevant work experience.

  • Masters in Information Management and Preservation (or similar) or working towards this is desirable.

  • Work experience within an archival setting.

  • Solid understanding of cataloguing/box-listing.

  • Some knowledge of archival standards and procedures.

  • Some experience of weeding and appraisal of archive materials.
