Job Description

You will use ArcGIS, Oracle, and a variety of associated tools to work directly on the Collins Bartholomew cartographic databases. This mapping is used in the prestigious Collins, Times and A-Z maps and atlases; and in digital form is trusted by many international organisations as an authoritative source of geographical knowledge.

Part of a team of in-house geographers, GIS experts, and cartographers; you will use your technical skills, eye for detail, and passion for geography to create and maintain accurate digital geographic content from street level to global that accurately reflects the world we live in today.

Working with others, you will use your knowledge and experience to create authoritative cartographic products in both print and digital formats using a combination of core databases and third-party sources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and research global geographical change [infrastructure, environmental, geopolitical] and edit vector GIS data using ESRI tools to reflect those changes.

  • Provide GIS support for creation of publication quality cartographic output for print and digital use.

  • Use your technical knowledge and experience of using a variety of software and data sources to help the Geo Team ensure they use the best tools and processes to support their work.

Your First Six Months

  • In your first six months you will get to grips with our geographic content and the tools we use to maintain it.

  • You will quickly become proficient at editing our vector GIS data assets to reflect geographic change.

  • You will gain an understanding of how our geographic content supports the creation of our printed and digital map products.

Experience Required

  • Confident user of GIS software, especially ArcGIS [ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro] and QGIS.

  • Experience working with a variety of geographic and cartographic data sets from different sources, including vector, raster, and textual data.

  • Experience using relational database management systems to manage geospatial data.

  • Experience of the practical application of technical geospatial solutions in a cartographic environment.

Skills Required

  • You will be comfortable working with GIS and database technology [particularly ESRI, QGIS and Oracle tools] and have an appreciation of what makes a ‘good map’.

  • You will be a strong team player used to delivering results through effective team working.

  • You will have a keen interest in global geography and a passion for creating authoritative digital geographic content that accurately reflects the world we live in today.

  • You will be a logical thinker with ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure.

  • You will enjoy explaining and advocating for technical geospatial solutions at all levels.
