Job Description
The Field Staffing Coordinator works within the larger Field Staffing Office (FSO) team to support the staffing of all NOLS field based courses worldwide. This role communicates directly with field instructors to match instructor’s goals, skill sets, assessment levels, individual interests, and availability to work opportunities.
NOLS Field instructors are the driving force behind exceptional student outcomes. The Field Staffing Office is one of the main conduits between the 650+ NOLS field instructors and the school. The FSO aims to serve Field Instructors in helping them access answers to their questions, bridge communication with the greater NOLS organization, and provide work opportunities that keep instructors engaged.
Key Logistical Points:
Location: NOLS HQ, Lander, WY or Remote. If remote, preference for work location within 4 hours of Mountain Standard time.
Start date: between April 14- May 15, 2025
Interviews: February 10 to February 18, 2025

What does a Field Staffing Coordinator do?
This role is in our Field Staffing team. A Field Staffing Coordinator must be able to problem solve, think creatively, and make decisions that directly impact the work opportunities provided to field instructors. They work in a highly collaborative environment and balance the perspectives and priorities of multiple stakeholders in order to make hiring decisions. They work closely with other field staffing coordinators, the field staffing director, field staffing manager, the Field Faculty Development department, program staff at NOLS campus locations, and the expedition education and risk management departments to supervise faculty performance and build effective field instructor teams.
You will be involved in the following activities:
Collaborate with program locations to hire well-balanced Instructor teams that support exceptional student experiences.
Problem solve emergent openings
Write and edit Instructor work agreements
Communicate with Instructors through email, phone, text, and in person to answer questions, inquire about availability and interest in work opportunities, understand individual’s goals, and build rapport.
Read Staff Performance Evaluations after the completion of courses to track individual instructor’s performance across all NOLS locations and approve promotions
On a rotating basis, take the lead on developing and managing a Seasonal Staffing Plan for the upcoming work season. This involves pairing Instructor work preferences with our anticipated course mix.
Collaborate with the Field Faculty Development department and operating locations in order to support Instructor development and coordinate training opportunities.
Support emergency openings by being “on call” for one weekend every 4-6 weeks. On-call weekends are typically busiest during the Boreal Summer season when the highest volume of courses are operating.
Meet with our Enrollment committee to advise on future course mix development based on staff limitations and pinch points.

Familiarity and experience as a NOLS field instructor. Has knowledge and experience with a variety of NOLS’s operating areas and skill sets.
Excellent written and verbal communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
Ability to prioritize and work under pressure and/or high volume
Recognizes key decision influencers and draws on them to advance projects; using these insights when the formal structure does not work as well as expected.
Delivers information in a clear and coherent way through email and phone, and is able to tailor the communication approach to individual instructor’s needs.
Detail Oriented; ability to track instructor communications and data on spreadsheets and our internal database
Shows awareness of the changing demographics landscape and seeks ways to increase inclusion and equity in our field staffing decisions.
In your first 6 months, you will:
Support the current seasonal plan by filling openings on all types of courses
Gain a deeper understanding of NOLS course offerings and classrooms, our current field faculty pool, and the skills that are required for specific courses.
Build relationships with Program teams across the globe
Gain proficiency in using software like AirTables and our internal database, Nexus

A final decision on which applicants to interview will be based on a combination of the answers to the application questions and work history and performance as a field instructor or in other related positions at NOLS.
