The role of the software development team leader is to organise the practice of, and processes relating to, software development of digital and enterprise business applications at HarperCollins UK.

This includes responsibility for managing the software development team that includes roles for software development, quality assurance, devops and devsecops personnel which together enable the secure software development lifecycle.

Key Tasks and Accountabilities

• Define key aspects of the Software Development Lifecycle including languages, frameworks, principles etc.

• Understand and communicate NewsCorp policies around software development, data protection and cybersecurity and ensure these are applied appropriately and consistently.

• Ensure we have appropriate processes for continuous integration/deployment, quality assurance and change management for key products and promote the extension of these to new systems.

• Contribute to Agile product development process as the primary software development stakeholder.

• Work collaboratively with functional team leads, ops management and the Solutions Architect in the planning and execution of the technology strategy.

• Ensure projects are properly resourced for development, testing, security, and ops/configuration activities.

• Participate in Technology Governance Board meetings/ decision-making. Attend global ARB meetings as required.

• Participate in the creation of product and portfolio roadmaps

  Experience required

• Substantial experience in software and application development.

• Experience of developing mission-critical enterprise applications and data.

• Experience designing secure solutions and have a robust knowledge of web and application security.

• An understanding of multi-tier application architecture and API service architectures.

• Experience of lead software developer role across multiple projects.

• Knowledge of user-centric design, user case specification and application usability principles.

• Experience of prototyping, rapid application development techniques and iterative development.

• Experience and knowledge of CI/CD processes, deployment pipelines, source code management and other devops practices.

Skills Required

• Advanced skill in one or more programming languages.

• Ability to exercise independent judgment and creative problem-solving techniques in a highly complex environment using leading-edge technology and/or integrating with diverse application systems.

• Able to work under minimal supervision, self-initiate action, plan and communicate to senior management.

• Comfortable working in a customer-facing role.

• A Bias for action, combined with an attention to detail.
