Job Description

Introduction to the role

Be responsible for all final cartographic output generated from the geographical information managed by the Geo Information Team.

Ensure sound editorial principles are applied to the research, acquisition, management and delivery of all cartographic content, and in liaison with the Head of Geo Information ensure appropriate technical solutions and processes are followed.

Liaise with Publishing and Business development staff during product planning to ensure existing cartographic assets are used appropriately and relevant new assets are sourced effectively by the Geo Information team.

Ensure that all cartographic and related output conforms to geopolitical and editorial policy.

Key tasks and accountabilities

  • Understand all existing cartographic assets (GIS and text databases, DTP Files, final publications etc.), ensure this information informs all product planning activities, and the Geo Information team are aware of all new assets that must be acquired/created to support future busines

  • Chair the Geo Policy Committee and ensure all policy decisions made are effectively communicated and adhered to throughout the business.

  • Creation and maintenance of policy documents working with the Geo Information team.

  • Ensure all cartographic output fully conforms to geopolitical and editorial policies at the point of delivery.

  • Provide support and direction so correct editorial decisions can be made across all Geo channels.

  • Oversee all product specific customization undertaken within the Creative Services team

Your first six months

You will assess all aspects of the Geo Information team from the personnel and team structure through working practices, to make sure the team is able to deliver on divisional priorities and is working as efficiently as possible.

Experience required

  • You will have a sound understanding of maps and atlases and have proven experience in their creation.

  • You will be a confident manager able to inspire and promote ideas within a team of mixed experience.

  •  You will have experience of wider geographical issues and have an understanding of Geopolitics.

  •  You will have a working knowledge and be able to demonstrate skill in one or more of these key areas: Cartographic Publishing, GIS, Cartographic Editorial work, Cartographic Design or Geographical Business Development.

Skills required

  •  You will be an effective decision maker, not shy at taking difficult decisions to achieve what is best.

  •  You will have a keen interest in global geography and a passion for creating authoritative digital geographic content that accurately reflect the world we live in today.

  • You will be a logical thinker with ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure.

  • Ability to act as a project manager on specific jobs as the need arises, especially projects with complex editorial requirements.
