Job Description

CogCo is looking to appoint an Associate Qualitative Researcher, with a background in either Design, Behavioural Science or related discipline.

In this role, you would be expected to support the work we undertake with a range of different organisations, from scaling technology companies and charities, to government departments and large corporations.

You will play an important role in projects as part of a multidisciplinary team, which will include behavioural scientists, data scientists and designers with a range of knowledge and expertise. As CogCo’s first dedicated qualitative researcher, this will often involve you enriching the quantitative research or design work being undertaken by colleagues.

Your role will be to design, conduct and manage a wide range of qualitative research methods using in-person and online settings as part of behavioural change programmes, with the aim of understanding the perspectives of users, customers, or employees. You will have experience applying these skills in practice, having trained in a relevant previous role and/or following academic training.

Some examples of work you might be asked to support include:

  • Conducting open or structured interviews to understand someone’s experience of using a product, service or programme

  • Conducting in person observation or ethnography during the testing and development of ideas, concepts and prototypes

  • Advocating for qualitative approaches to share perspectives with the team and enhance our offering to partners

  • Developing personas and mapping user journeys to help identify pain points or opportunities to improve the user experience

  • Putting together slide decks and presentations that set out a range of interesting behavioural effects, which are of particular interest to our partner companies

  • Participating in partner meetings and presentations, delivering key findings and relevant insights in engaging ways that are easy for a non-specialist to understand.

  • Writing reports, think pieces or blog posts that summarise the outcomes of research, including from research studies that we have run ourselves.

  • Running co-creation sessions and workshops (including using online platforms) to take forward ideas for our own digital products.

  • Supporting CogCo’s ongoing programme of work to apply the latest evidence from design and behavioural science to our own ways of working.

All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • An academic qualification or equivalent on-the-job training in the application of qualitative research

  • Experience designing, conducting and managing relevant qualitative research methodologies.

  • Experience recruiting appropriate participant samples; capturing, collating, and analysing the data; and using it to generate new insights

  • An interest in developing new qualitative research methods (alongside other members of the CogCo team).

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present findings with Google Slides and digital whiteboard platforms (e.g. Miro).

  • Ability to deliver work to tight deadlines for client partners

  • Excellent project management skills

The following are desirable but not essential:

  • A strong interest in how behavioural science or design methods can be used to help change behaviour.

  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team, including working alongside quantitative researchers
