Job Description

Overview

  • Start date: Before September ideal

  • Reporting to: Chief Product Officer

  • Visa sponsorship: UK national or visa holder preferred, but not a dealbreaker.

  • Background checks: Due to the nature of the work we do with global governments and partners, all employees need to pass background checks, verifying your identity, education (if relevant), work history, sanctions, criminal record, adverse financial history and right to work.

  • You can expect to hear from us, no matter the outcome, by:  8th August

  • Salary expectations: We aim for transparency on salary bands. If our range is misaligned with your expectations, we’d welcome an open conversation as early as possible.

  • Recruiters: We don't need any agency support. Please do not get in contact.

Due to the high number of applications we receive, we can't speak to candidates before first interview. Please refrain from contacting members of our small team for a call.

Role

We’re expanding our product team as our platform scales to serve more governments and public servants globally. We need experienced product managers who can build features that deliver value, drive adoption, and meet the high standards of trust, security, and compliance that come with working in the public sector space.

You’ll lead a product domain, defining what we build, guiding how it gets delivered, and ensuring it meets the needs of our users and partners. You’ll work cross-functionally to shape high-quality experiences that are technically sound, strategically aligned, and usable at scale, directly support our mission to help public servants connect and learn, while contributing to the platform foundations that enable us to grow responsibly and effectively.

Day-to-day

What you’ll be doing:

  • Define and evolve the product vision and roadmap for a core domain

  • Drive discovery, prioritisation, and execution within your squad

  • Partner with the Partnerships team to translate user and partner needs into clear product requirements

  • Use data and qualitative insights to make informed decisions and evaluate impact

  • Lead delivery processes, ensuring clarity and quality across sprints

  • Contribute to improving how product is practised across the organisation

What you won’t be doing:

  • Delivering on a fixed roadmap—we expect you to help shape it

  • Working in isolation—collaboration and context-sharing are core to how we build

  • Avoiding legacy or compliance work—some things just need to be done well

Role expectations

Within one month, you will…

  • Take ownership of a product area and get familiar with its users, metrics, and systems

  • Build context through shadowing, documentation, and team rituals

  • Set up clear communication flows with your squad and stakeholders

Within three months, you will…

  • Share a roadmap with clear goals and success metrics

  • Improve at least one process or system within your product area

Within six months, you will…

  • Lead your first major feature or improvement from discovery to launch

  • Demonstrate consistent product impact through adoption, retention, or quality metrics

  • Champion improvements to our platform or practice that benefit the wider team

  • Be a trusted voice in shaping how Apolitical builds product at scale

About you

This is a great fit if you…

  • Think in systems and enjoy aligning user, partner, and business needs

  • Can move between strategy and detail with ease

  • Care about clarity—of thought, documentation, and communication

  • Have strong product instincts grounded in evidence, not ego

  • Are energised by building with a mission-driven, ambitious team

This likely won’t be the right role if you…

  • Prefer executing over shaping product direction

  • Want clear hierarchies or fixed processes—this role requires comfort with ambiguity

  • Avoid stakeholder work—collaboration across teams is a daily part of the job

Don’t meet every single expectation? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. Apolitical is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.

Application Process

Apolitical uses Applied in our recruitment. Applied aims to overcome unconscious bias in recruiting. Instead of using your CV alone, we'll be asking you to answer questions to test skills needed for the role. The answers are then anonymised, and reviewed in a random order by members of our team.

The Applied platform also asks some demographic questions before you start your application.  No one at Apolitical sees the answers to these demographic questions with your application. We only see summary statistics to help us check if our candidate pool is balanced and if everyone has an equal chance to get hired irrespective of their background. If you prefer, you can easily opt out of answering these questions.

Using AI in your application answers

At Apolitical, we embrace new technologies and encourage the use of AI in our work. However, as AI becomes more prevalent, it can be difficult to distinguish between machine-generated content and the unique perspectives of candidates. We’re excited to see how you use AI tools to structure and refine your answers, but we value your unique insights above all else. Ensure your application reflects your voice and how your skills align with our mission.
