Job Description

To support planning and delivery of creative, national and regional media strategies for Comic Relief’s partnerships and fundraising campaigns, including Sport Relief and Red Nose Day. This role will lead the efficient running of the Comic Relief press office function and take a proactive role in the team’s day-to-day management, which can include press cuttings, renewing subscriptions and internal comms updates. They will be enthusiastic, brimming with ideas and initiative, and used to working as part of a small but busy team.

Key Accountabilities / Objectives

  • Work alongside Senior Media Officer and Media Leads, to assist planning and delivery of creative national and regional media strategies that feed into and support wider organisational objectives, taking a leading role in media relations and securing national and regional online, print, social and broadcast coverage

  • Set up media interviews, write briefing materials and attend interviews when required (this might be out of London on occasion)

  • Own small projects with support of line manager

  • Take a leading role in the day-to-day running of an efficient press office, managing inbound media interest and ensure a smooth process from start to finish – answer media enquiries and work with internal teams to draft responses as required

  • Implement and lead Media team management systems and processes – this includes the daily press update for internal stakeholders, monitoring coverage, saving coverage, creating coverage reports, budget management (with Head of Media) and team rotas

  • Work closely with external partners and organisations where appropriate to help maximise their involvement with Comic Relief – this might be PR agencies or partners

  • Draft and edit high quality, compelling written materials and ensure sign off-of all materials. This includes feeding in to strategy documents, pulling together targeted media lists, writing press releases, briefing documents, website news articles and quotes from Comic Relief spokespeople

  • Work directly with Comic Relief funded projects, and the people they support, to show the positive impact donations make. This may involve setting up and managing visits with journalists, influencers, and high-profile supporters

  • Be flexible and support the wider Media team with ad hoc tasks as directed, such as delivering PR events, launches, attending shoots to gather media assets and pitching stories to media

Essential Education:

  • Experience of working in PR / media roles

  • You are likely to be an Account Executive or similar in a PR agency or a Media Executive or similar in house

Key Competencies:

  • Proven experience of working on national and regional media campaigns

  • An ability to develop and deliver fresh creative ideas that generate media coverage

  • Strong organisational skills

  • Excellent writer

  • Good media relations and confidence to approach journalists with story ideas

  • Good experience managing and prioritising multiple projects to strict deadlines even when faced with challenges

  • Passionate and strong understanding of our business mission
