Job Description
HarperCollins NonFiction are looking for a Design Manager/ Senior Designer for the Gift & IP list (title/salary dependent on experience). The successful candidate will be working across a diverse range of books including cookery, humour and gift titles as well as titles from brand partners such as Cadburys, Baileys and Terry’s Chocolate.
Working closely with the Art Director and internal stakeholders, the candidate will be expected to create a vision for both covers and internal spreads, either developing designs themselves in-house or managing external freelancers to consistently deliver print-ready artwork on time and within budget. The role will also involve commissioning photography or illustration as and when required.
The design of these books is crucial to the continuing success of this list and as such is a key role within the Non Fiction Design team.
This role is based in London, currently in the office on a 2 day plus model
Key Accountabilities:
Create new and innovative designs for a range of illustrated book titles across the Gift & IP division
This will involve designing complete illustrated books, from the internals through to the cover (in-house when time permits or freelancing out when necessary)
You will also be involved in creating sample page designs for both colour and mono titles, creating mood boards, as well as commissioning illustrations and commissioning/directing photoshoots.
As this is a fast-paced and constantly challenging environment, you must have excellent time and project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects, set expectations and work individually and/or collaboratively across teams.
Keep abreast and understanding the latest design trends – especially in illustration styles, photography, lifestyle and gift books
Person Specification:
Must have strong understanding of illustrated book design in print, gained from working in a similar role of illustrated publishing or in the magazine industry
Solid experience of 4 colour and mono printing processes.
Proficient in creating open files (including cover finishes) and print ready PDF’s for repro and print.
