Job Description

Associate Data Scientist

CogCo is looking to appoint an Associate Data Scientist. In this role, you would be expected to support the work we undertake with a range of different companies - from tech start-ups to larger corporations. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, which will include behavioural scientists, designers and data scientists.

You will have an excellent knowledge of applied statistical methods gained through relevant training (academic or applied). Experience of working with clients as part of a project team is desired.

You must have the right to work in the UK at the start of employment (this could include the Graduate visa). CogCo does offer the possibility of sponsorship in the future, but candidates must currently have the right to work.

Role Overview

Some examples of work you might be asked to do as part of a multidisciplinary team include:

  • Assess the performance of products, apps, or platforms by analysing large data sets and determining the relationships between particular features and outcomes.

  • Conduct experiment and survey work by generating design ideas, scripting the experiment or survey, conducting statistical analysis and communicating results to stakeholders.

  • Support projects by contributing to partner conversations, communicating effectively, working collaboratively with the team, keeping to timelines, and contributing to final deliverables.

  • Write-up and visualise the results and findings from analysis you have conducted in a clear and succinct way. This can include charts, written reports and slide decks.

  • Learn new methodologies and technologies in order to contribute to ongoing work in refining or expanding CogCo’s experimental and analysis repertoire ,

  • Contribute to R&D and ongoing work on the use of generative AI in the field of behavioural science, including supporting a new AI-powered product that CogCo has developed.

  • Contribute to the improvement of CogCo’s internal ways of working. Existing examples include the way we give and receive feedback; how we use rewards; how we conduct better research within different cultures, and how we do performance development.

Skills and Experience

All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • A degree in a relevant field, such as statistics, operations research, data science, psychology, econometrics, or economics; or equivalent experience in a recent role.

  • Proficiency with R and its statistical tooling is required, as it is heavily used in our work with partners. Familiarity with Python and its corresponding data science packages is a strong plus for our R&D work, though there will be opportunities to develop these skills on the job.

  • Experience running experiments and survey research, including online RCTs, and psychometric analysis of questionnaires.

  • Strong data visualisation skills

  • Good project management skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to independently deliver high quality work to a tight deadline, feeding into the wider work being undertaken as part of a team

  • The ability to work collaboratively and contribute code using git (and a platform such as GitHub) is desirable but not essential.

A note on using generative AI tools: At CogCo we understand that large language model tools, such as chatGPT, are useful for kickstarting thinking. However, we consider copying answers from them a form of plagiarism. We will take steps to assess whether it is likely that you have relied on such tools to generate your answers and this could lead to you being removed from further consideration for the role. These questions have been carefully selected to help us assess whether you are a good fit for the role and would be able to perform the responsibilities that come along with it. We look forward to seeing your depth of knowledge, individuality and creativity in responding to them!
