Job Description

PURPOSE

To put members of the professional umpires’ team in the best possible position to produce world leading performances in every game of professional cricket they officiate.

YOU’LL BE DOING

Development

  • To work with every member of the professional umpires’ team to establish and maintain a personal development plan.

  • To review every performance evaluation report produced by ECB match referees, offering your own feedback to umpires when appropriate.

  • To gain additional, verbal feedback from ECB match referees, which may be beneficial for the umpires and to inform your decision making.

  • To develop and deliver regular needs led learning opportunities, employing modern methods of delivery and, where appropriate, engaging other subject matter experts.

  • To maximise the effectiveness of ECB umpire coaches through allocating and appointing them appropriately.

  • To work with the Umpires’ Pathway Manager to identify and provide development opportunities for prospective professional umpires and women umpires officiating in the professional game.

  • To regularly attend matches, observe umpires’ performances and provide feedback to them.

  •  To ensure that umpires have access to appropriate, specialist, support to aid their development e.g., sports psychologists

Operations

  • To appoint umpires to professional cricket in England and Wales, providing opportunities on the basis of both performance and potential.

  • To be a subject matter expert in the Laws of Cricket, playing conditions and regulations, both domestic and International.

  • To establish and maintain data relating to appointments, availability and performance.

  • To make recommendations to the Head of Officiating on the promotion, demotion and performance management of umpires.

  • To develop relationships with personnel who contribute to match day operations e.g., the ECB venue managers and HawkEye technicians.

Relationships and Management

  • To develop strong relationships with the professional umpires’ team, creating an environment in which consistently high performance is expected.

  • To hold regular performance reviews with all umpires, referencing match referees’ reports, feedback from umpire coaches and personal observations.

  • To manage the activity of umpire coaches, ensuring they are appropriately trained and prepared for their role and to provide them with regular feedback on their performance.

  • To develop relationships with Counties’ Directors of Cricket and Head Coaches, influencing constructive dialogue and feedback on umpires’ performance.

  • To develop relationships with the ICC Umpires’ and Referees’ Manager, keeping on top of developments in umpiring internationally.
