Job Description

Introduction to the role

HarperCollins non-fiction team are looking for a Commissioning Editor in the lifestyle, gift and creativity area. The ideal candidate will have excellent contacts with a wide range of brands, agents and authors with whom we can develop publishing partnerships. The role will suit digitally-savvy and commercially astute candidates who have both initiative and energy. The team need someone who is excited about a role where they can creatively about how we commission and publish our books.

We are looking for someone with excellent commercial instincts, strong desk editing skills and a meticulous eye for detail. The role will have ownership of a stable of self-generated titles, brand partnerships and authors. A big part of the role is using initiative to develop ideas and commission books for a range of traditional and non-traditional retailers and consumers. This position will ensure these books are seen through to publication for both physical and digital editions.

The role requires both excellent editorial skills and creative and commercial flair, with the successful candidate taking on responsibility for the entire publishing process. From negotiating deals to briefing design and cover briefs, and copy-writing and ensuring books are delivered on schedule and within budget, this is a hugely varied role. Forming strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and pushing the boundaries of traditional publishing is also fundamental.

What we are looking for

We are looking for someone with robust trade editorial experience across black and white illustrated titles. The key skills required include an entrepreneurial attitude and solid commercial awareness.

You must be a solid team player with the ability to juggle multiple projects. We're looking for a global thinker, someone who can see beyond the book and help us to develop digital, international and audio sales. A cross-company thinker is crucial as is excellent communications skills for presentations and writing for catalogs and cover copy.
