Job Description
Introduction to the role
This is the perfect role for a creative marketeer with a love of books and bookshops. Working in HarperCollins UK’s dedicated Trade Marketing team within Group Sales, and alongside sales managers, divisional marketeers and publicists, the Trade Marketing Manager drives HarperCollins communications and relationships with booksellers across the UK and Ireland, including independents, Waterstones, Foyles and Blackwell’s. The Trade Marketing Manager plays a crucial role in spreading the word about HarperCollins UK’s new publishing, building buzz to favourably position new book releases ahead of the sales team selling cycles, and creating relevant assets to help drive sell through on publication.
Key tasks and accountabilities
Manage our book programmes for independent booksellers in the UK and Ireland – including website, social media, email and trade events
Work with Trade Marketing team colleagues on the delivery of the annual ‘Big Book’ trade events programme in the UK and Ireland, playing a key role in the development of the creative, the physical/digital events and author film content
Act as the link for the Field Sales Team into the divisional marketing teams
Working with divisional marketing colleagues, develop and implement bookshop trade plans for focus titles including proofs, signed books, cover reveals and author activity
Working with divisional marketing teams on creative POS planning, ensuring POS follows the relevant Sales critical path
Devise activity to position HarperCollins books and authors at the heart of industry events, including Bookshop Day, Independent Bookshop Week and the annual Booksellers Association Conference
Work with divisional colleagues on trade plans for high priority event books and indie focussed titles – adding value from acquisition through to post publication
Always seeking new opportunities to evolve HarperCollins trade marketing programme, trying and testing new strands to help shape the role and activity to best serve our customers current needs
Your first three months
Establish a network of trade marketing contacts across the HarperCollins divisions
Manage the day to day running of our Independent Thinking and HarperInsider social channels on X and Instagram
Create and send regular email marketing and communications to our dedicated indie and Waterstones contact lists
Work with divisional colleagues to create and implement pre and post publication trade plans for key bookshop focused titles
Begin to build relationships with leading booksellers at independents and Waterstones – both through social/email, regular bookshop visits and industry networking opportunities
Help with the creation and delivery of the HarperCollins Big Book events programme and supporting marketing material
Experience required
Knowledge or experience of the publishing industry
Website/social media management experience
Ability to multitask across numerous and diverse tasks
Working with multiple stakeholders
Skills required
Curious and highly creative
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Collaborative team player with strong relationship building skills
A passion for bookshops and a wide range of books
Excellent copywriting skills
Experience with email marketing platforms, Wordpress, Canva or Photoshop would be beneficial
